Sometimes it can be a little hard to hear if your dog is overweight but please remember if your vet, dog walker, groomer or other pet professional brings it up, we do so with love. We love your pets too and want them to live long and happy lives. Carrying that extra weight can have a huge detrimental impact on their long term and short term health, so remember that sometimes, no matter how guilty they make you feel, it’s kinder not to give them that extra treat 😉
Weight management.... I know we talk about it a lot but that's because it so important! Not only can being overweight contribute to joint disease but a host of other diseases too. And we know you want to give your dog treats... but it may not always be in their best interest to over indulge!!
Our blog article from Vet Nurse Robyn Lowe is a good read for those wanting to know more about why weight management is important and learn how to asses your dogs weight at home. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/3m0Hmak
And remember:
1. You should be able to feel their ribs easily. Imagine feeling your knuckle, this is what you
want it to feel like.
2. When you look from above you should see the chest then a waist tuck inwards. You want to see an ‘hour glass figure’ where there is a waist line after the chest.
3. From the side you want to see an ‘abdominal tuck’ where you see the abdomen tuck upwards after the chest.
If any of the above doesn't apply to your dog they are probably overweight and need need to slim down to protect their overall health.
