I recently had a phone call with someone in a little bit of a panic as they thought they had been walking their dog in potentially dangerous conditions.
The above guides are exactly that. Guides. Some may be slightly different to others, and thatβs okay because some dogs are different than others.
There are all sorts of different factors to take into consideration when it comes to the sun.
- Is there shade available?
- Will you provide plenty of opportunities for water & breaks
- Does your dog calmly poodle along by your side? Or it frantically sprinting around for the duration of your walk?
Not everyone has access to a garden or outside space for their dog, therefore they have no choice but to go out in hot weather. There are plenty of options in regards to things you can do to help your dog manage and cope.
-Try to walk early/late in the day.
-Take plenty of water and offer it to your dog as frequently as possible.
- Avoid hot pavements or invest in some breathable boots/shoes to help protect your dogs paws.
- If youβre putting your dog in the car, place the aircon on or open windows before you put your dog straight in.
- Avoid stopping and leaving your dog in the car and just head straight for your walk and back home.
- Use your garden where possible, but in the event you do need to use other areas try to keep it short and sweet and preferably in the shade!
Things like fans, cool mats, cool jackets/bandanas are all useful products to help keep your dog comfortable.
If your dog struggles with switching off and your usual routine of long walks isnβt possible. Try some less strenuous training exercises like perfecting your lead work, stays/steadiness exercises, leave training indoors and home, practice your dogs doorbell reactions or doorway manners. Scent or find it games are also a great way of getting your dogs brain working without too much exercise in the heat.
Ultimately, no one knows your dog better than you. Every dog is different, and every owners routine and situation will be different too. Look out for the signs your dog is uncomfortable and if you need any help or guidance we are happy to help βΊοΈ
