‼️‼️‼️BLOWFLY ALERT:‼️‼️‼️PREVENTION: SHEARING AND USING FLY INSECTICIDE POUR ON-> Phone Glenshane Vets for advice
Blowfly strike is a serious condition in sheep caused by blowflies laying eggs on the animal's body, particularly in areas with soiled wool or wounds. The hatched maggots then feed on the sheep's flesh, causing intense irritation, skin damage, and potentially leading to severe illness or death.
Preventative measures are important:
Shearing: Shearing can help reduce the risk by removing soiled wool and making it harder for flies to lay eggs.
Chemical treatments: Pour-on insecticides, like can provide protection for several weeks.
Breeding: Breeding for sheep with better fleece characteristics and resistance to strike is also an option.
