This is interesting for anyone who likes equine dentistry.

Critique had a number of ‘extra’ incisors… these were, in fact, baby teeth that had failed to fall out and had ended up pushing the erupting adult teeth out of alignment. You can see the problem baby teeth in the photos with the arrows.

The good news is that once these teeth are extracted, the adult teeth have got space to drift into position. So - we took the offending adult teeth out.

I’ve been taking photos of his teeth each time I’ve examined him. And look now- the adult teeth are drifting into the right position in September 2025 and are now perfectly aligned.

This is much better for him and he now has both a functional and cosmeticly comfortable set of incisors.

Eddie and Ronnie 😍 - great start to my day. Routine dental visits for these mini Shetlands, a bit of sedation to make the job a little easier followed by some dental care and a clip. These guys are done every six months to keep everything in good order - and their teeth are looking fabulous ☺️

The nicest coincidence today. This is Joe and Lara. Funnily enough the same names as my children 🤩

Indulge me here, another old pal with several missing teeth and very few opposing teeth. This is my mate Monte, having his regular dental check up. I’ve taken a lot of teeth out of his mouth over the years, thankfully none recently. He’s a good weight and thriving. There’s definitely a theme to my last couple of posts - older horses can do really well despite missing several teeth if the remaining ones are comfortable and they are on the right diet.

The lovely Fenn. An older pony with very few teeth that meet. This was her regular dental check up, although she doesn’t have a lot of chewing ability her mouth is very comfortable and she’s doing great. The metal thing in her mouth is my cheek retractor , used to make looking at her teeth a little easier.

Happy New Year to everyone who is passionate about their horses’ teeth. I’ve started the year as I mean to go on, looking after the dental needs of my equine friends, with a nice sunrise, a lovely yard in Buxton and a bonus moonrise on the way home this evening 😀
