𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 💜

From an early age, I have been immersed in the world of horses, developing a profound appreciation for these magnificent creatures. My passion for horse rescue was ignited when my friends and I rescued my cherished old horse from a charity in Ireland. Upon his arrival, he was little more than skin and bones, an experience that solidified my commitment to aiding horses in need.

This dedication prompted me to pursue a formal education, beginning with my GCSEs, followed by a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Management and Equine Management at Reaseheath College. I then advanced to a Level 3 Technical Diploma in Equine Management and ultimately enrolled in university to deepen my knowledge of horse rehabilitation, training, behavior, and nutrition at University Centre Reaseheath. Over the past years, I had balanced academic study with practical experience, working with racehorses and ex-flat racers.

Throughout this journey, I have faced various learning disabilities and medical challenges, which I am willing to discuss if anyone is interested—please feel free to reach out. 😊

In addition to my studies, I have had the privilege of receiving training from esteemed professionals such as Car Day and Martin focusing on equine health care. I have also connected with remarkable individuals in the equine industry, including Caroline Dickens known from Baileys Horse Feeds event rider Tyler Cassells at Somerford Park, and national British Showjumping course designer Sue Barratt, among others. A highlight of my experience was touring Richard Davison's yard, where I learned about his training methods and interacted with his horses.

After completing my studies at Reaseheath College, I continued my education at the University Centre Reaseheath, where I forged invaluable connections that furthered my career in the equine sector. The experiences I gained, including working with horses from The British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre and participating in events such as arena parties and veterinary tours at Nantwich Equine Vets, have been instrumental in my development.

Since then, I have assisted others with their horses and am currently employed at a veterinary practice, where I aim to support even more horses in need.

Now, I am committed to sharing my journey and helping others with their equine companions. I extend my gratitude to everyone who has supported me along the way! 💌

𝐁.𝐅. 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 , 𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

The rat experienced a distressing electric current that caused considerable discomfort. As it explored the enclosure, it inadvertently triggered a lever that immediately deactivated the electriccurrent.

After several trials, the rats quickly learned to navigate directly to the lever. The relief from the electric shock served as positive reinforcement, encouraging them to consistently repeat the behavior.

Negative reinforcement refers to the removal of an undesirable event or outcome following a specific behavior. In this context, the response is strengthened by the elimination of an unpleasant stimulus.

𝐁.𝐅. 𝐒𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

F. Skinner conducted experiments grounded in the principle that an action followed by a favourable response is more likely to be repeated than one accompanied by an unpleasant or neutral response.

To demonstrate the concept of positive reinforcement, Skinner utilised a device known as the Skinner box, which contained a lever on one side. When a hungry rat was placed inside the box, it would inadvertently press the lever while exploring its environment. Upon doing so, a food pellet would be dispensed into a container adjacent to the lever.

Through repeated trials, the rats quickly learned to approach the lever immediately after being placed in the box. The positive consequence of receiving food for pressing the lever reinforced this behaviour, leading to its repetition.

Positive reinforcers are favorable events or outcomes that occur following a behaviour. In situations involving positive reinforcement, a response or behaviour is strengthened through the addition of praise or tangible rewards

𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫.

During the autumn and winter months, the diminished growth of pasture and the decrease in available nutrients necessitate that many horses receive conserved forage, primarily in the form of hay and haylage.

Haylage is characterized by its higher moisture content compared to traditional hay, as it is harvested while the grass is still in its younger stages. This results in haylage producing significantly less dust, particularly when contrasted with lower-quality hay. Additionally, depending on the specific variety of haylage chosen, it may offer superior levels of protein and energy relative to conventional hay.

This makes haylage an excellent choice for animals with respiratory issues, as the reduced dust levels can help prevent irritation and respiratory distress. Furthermore, the higher protein and energy content can contribute to better overall health and growth in livestock, making it a preferred option for farmers looking to optimize their animals' diets.

Another advantage of haylage is its palatability. Many animals find haylage to be more appealing, which can lead to improved feed intake and, consequently, better nutrient absorption. This can be particularly beneficial during the winter months or periods of poor grazing conditions when maintaining adequate nutrition is crucial.

Storage is also a key consideration. Unlike traditional hay, which needs to be kept dry to prevent mold and spoilage, haylage is typically stored in airtight, sealed plastic wrap or bags. This anaerobic environment helps to preserve the feed by preventing the growth of spoilage organisms. Properly stored haylage can last for several months, providing a reliable source of high-quality feed throughout the year.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 🌾 The weather is set to continue to be mild and showery – perfect weather for grass growth! ⚠️

Even if your good-doer made it out of winter slimmer than they went in, early vigilance is essential to ensure they don’t put it all back on again, over the spring and summer. ☀️

Grass is a significant source of calories, especially at this time of year, so controlling intake can make a big difference. ✅ Just reducing your horse’s time at grass may encourage them to just eat more as soon as they’re turned out so it’s worth considering other ways to control grass intake:

⚠️ Strip grazing – This is relatively easy to do with movable electric fencing and is definitely preferable to free range access to larger areas of lush grazing.

⚠️ Track systems – These can be on grass or all-weather surfaces (with alternative forage provided) and can help encourage more movement and exercise.

⚠️ Grazing muzzles – These can reduce grass intake by up to 80% and allow a horse to roam with companions who don’t need to wear a muzzle.

We look at the Pros and Cons of all these methods in our new revised Equine Weight Loss Handbook. Order your free copy: https://www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk/equine-weight-loss
