When I first started with Otis he was very excitable, couldn’t walk in a straight line on the lead and didn’t listen to commands.

He’s come such a long way since he’s been attending dog training sessions.

My dog training classes are every Wednesday from 7pm in East Budleigh Village Hall. Beginners and advanced classes available. Benefit from loose lead walking training, recall, basic obedience, socialisation and more.

Living with a Reactive Dog: What I Wish More People Knew

Owning a reactive dog can feel incredibly lonely. If you know, you know. You see other people strolling along with dogs happily greeting each other, playing off lead, running free — and meanwhile, you’re scanning the horizon, managing distance, avoiding busy places, and praying today’s walk won’t end in tears — yours or your dog’s.

A reactive dog isn’t a “bad dog”. They’re a dog who struggles to cope with the world the way calmer dogs do. Some react because they’re scared. Some bark or lunge because they need space. Some have had bad experiences they can’t just forget. And every walk can feel like walking on eggshells, hoping you won’t bump into that one off-lead dog with an owner shouting, “It’s OK! He’s friendly!”

Here’s the truth: it’s not OK. When your off-lead dog charges up to a reactive dog who needs space, you’re not helping. You’re setting back days, weeks, months of training. You’re pushing another owner to the edge. You’re causing stress, embarrassment, and sometimes real danger.

Many of us walk our reactive dogs at odd hours, in the rain, or in places no one else goes, just to keep everyone safe. We put in the work — training, treats, games, special equipment — just to help our dogs feel safe enough to pass another dog at a distance. And every calm walk is a small miracle, a huge win.

So if you see us stepping off the path, putting our dog on a lead, or calling out “Please call your dog!” — please listen. Put your dog on a lead. Give us space. Respect the effort we’re making to keep everyone safe and calm.

To those walking this road: you’re not alone. You’re doing an amazing job, even on the days it feels impossible. You’re the safe place for your dog in a world they don’t always understand — and that’s something to be proud of.

If you have a reactive dog, drop a photo below and share something you wish people understood about your dog. Let’s remind each other we’re not alone.

I received this lovely review from a valued client a couple of weeks ago. I have extensive experience with rescue dogs having had them all my life and I work closely with the Animal Rescue Centre in Ottery.

Working with rescue dogs has reinforced the importance of tailored, compassionate training. Each dog comes with a unique history, and helping them build confidence and trust is both a challenge and a privilege.

If you need support with training a rescue dog, or any dog, please send me a message and I would be happy to help you 🐶

Our Story

My name is Keith and I set up Sutton K9 Services. I became seriously interested in dogs over 20 years ago when I started a volunteering for a German Shepherd Dog re-homimg charity.

To improve my understanding of the issues dogs in rescue experienced I started studying with both the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers and the Cambridge Institute of Dog Training and Behaviour.

Over the last 20 years I have I given a permanent home to six GSD’s and fostered another 8 for varying lengths of time. I currently have 3 dogs which you may well see me walking locally if you live in Walmley.

I moved to Sutton Coldfield in January 2019 and offer clients a truly professional 5 star dog walking service. I also offer 1 to 1 obedience training lessons. I still find time to volunteer for a dog rescue and also as a trainer at a local dig training club.
