Adolescence can look like “not listening,”
forgetting cues they knew yesterday,
or suddenly finding everything in the environment more interesting than you.

It isn’t stubbornness.
It isn’t dominance.
And it definitely isn’t your dog plotting against you.

It’s a brain under construction. 🧠

Just like human teenagers, dogs go through a developmental phase where impulses grow faster than self-control, confidence grows faster than judgement, and curiosity grows faster than recall.

Progress doesn’t disappear — it just takes the scenic route for a while.
Patience, consistency, and a good sense of humour go a long way during this stage.

You’re not doing it wrong. You’re raising a learner. 💛

⚠️ID TAGS⚠️

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar tag with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (however as the legislation was written in 1992 before the advancements in technology and mobile phones, we would definitely recommend this).

Adding your dog's name is optional. But as dog theft is a real danger, if the thief knows the name of your dog this may help them pass on the dog to the unsuspecting new owners because it appears they know the dog because the dog responds to their name. So we recommend, you don't add your dogs name.

An example of the information to put on a dog tag is:

Mr A Smtih
No 54, BX17 7TD
01202 232218

OR

Mr A Smtih
54 Letsbe Avenue
BX17 7TD
01202 232218

Certain dogs are exempt from having to wear a collar with a dog tag. They are:

• Any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
• Any dog while being used in emergency rescue work.
• Any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, HM Customs and Excise or the police.
• Any dog while being used for driving or tending cattle or sheep.
• Any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin.
• Any dog while being used for sporting purposes.

Can we normalise asking people pop their dogs on lead to pass each other or to recall to them.

🐾it’s not rude
🐾it’s not accusing
🐾not all dogs need to meet
🐾not all dogs like every single dog
🐾it’s not offensive

It’s not unreasonable to be asked to control your dog so there is no need to be defensive.
It’s the basics of owning a dog.
When did it become offensive to control your dog. When did it become one dogs need to interact is more important than another dogs need to be left alone.
Someone who is just trying to protect their dog and yours should not be met with abuse.

People sometimes expect dogs to respond perfectly the moment we “teach” something once. But dogs aren’t robots. They don’t get information downloaded into them. They learn through repetition, patience, consistency, and clear communication.

When a dog struggles, it doesn’t mean they’re “stubborn” or “disobedient.” It just means they’re still learning, and they need us to guide them calmly and consistently.

If we want reliable behavior, we have to practice the basics over and over, just like we do with any skill in life.

Training takes patience, not programming. 🐶❤️
