Doggone Shame - Lyme Regis Empty Beaches Looking for compromise and fair access for all.

Highlighting the unfair and pointless on lead dog restrictions during the winter season and a full ban of dogs during high season on the Lyme Regis Front Sandy Beach. Highlighting the unfair and pointless dogs on lead restrictions during the winter season and a full ban of dogs during high season on the Lyme Regis Front Sandy Beach. We are seeking a compromise and fair access for all, particularly

for dogs off leads in the Winter months and from 1 May to 30 Sept at least dogs off lead before 10am then after 6pm to accommodate visitors & residents with children and a family dog, those with mobility issues or disabilities. The previous order worked well as it allowed dog off lead exercise on the safe and accessible Lyme Regis Front Sandy Beach which is non tidal and suitable for both dogs and owners with or without mobility issues. The new order brought in on the 1 January 2021 is forcing dog owners onto neighbouring beaches which are tidal (underwater for a large proportion of the day), accessed by steep steps, huge rocks and stone with warnings of deep shelves, mudslides, debris from a Victorian Tip and and cliff falls in order to seek off lead exercise for their dogs, putting both dog owners and their dogs at risk of injury due to not being able to use the safe and accessible Sandy Front Beach for safe off lead exercise.

If you meet another dog owner today, start a friendly conversation.

Many people do not know that beach rules are reviewed every three years through a Public Space Protection Order consultation.

Let them know the next consultation is expected in 2026.

The more law abiding dog owners who know about it, the stronger the voice for fair access.

Lyme Regis is a special place.

Residents, visitors, swimmers, walkers and dog owners all enjoy this coastline.

Law abiding dog owners care about this town.
We look after the beach and respect the rules.

From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned.

We are asking for simple, sensible access before 10am and after 6pm during summer, as seen successfully in other areas.

Early mornings and evenings are calm, quiet and ideal for safe, respectful dog exercise.

This is about balance.
This is about fairness.
This is about responsible access for everyone.

This is how we win.

Not shouting.
Not arguing.
Just steady, consistent proof that responsible dog ownership works in Lyme Regis.

Responsible dog owners are part of the Lyme Regis community.

We support local businesses.
We walk in all weathers.
We care for our beaches.

The current winter off lead access was not gifted. It was earned through evidence and persistence.

As the next PSPO approaches, we must stay engaged to protect what works and improve summer access fairly and responsibly.

Five years of evidence.
Hundreds of responsible dog owners.
One big win.

Dogs are now permitted off lead in Lyme Regis from 1 October to 30 April because we stood together.

Let us not be complacent. The next PSPO consultation is coming in 2026. What we have secured can only be protected if we show up again.

We bag it.
We bin it.
We litter pick.
We leave only pawprints.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Discrimination Solicitor

We continue to work hard behind the scenes for everyone and have some extremely exciting news to share with you all following the disappointing show from the 5 Oct Dorset Council discussion of the Recommendations of dogs off leads for the new PSPO. A highly successful Discrimination Solicitor, who has experience in PSPO's, is willing to help us challenge the forthcoming Dogs PSPO if the outcome doesn't take into account the needs of those with disabilities as laid out in the Equality Act.

Following the Report from the Dogs on Beaches Consultation we know that 54% were in favour of dogs off leads and the Recommendation from Dorset Council was for dogs off leads on the Lyme Regis Town Beach. The Officers also reported that East Beach, Church Cliff Beach and Monmonth Beach are not suitable for those with disabilities. Therefore if the recommendation for dogs off leads is not upheld, and with no suitable adjacent beaches, this will be against the Equality Act if disabled dog owners are signposted to the adjacent beaches for dog off lead exercise.

Please share your thoughts.

Daily photo evidence, from 1 Jan 2021 to 31 May 2023, has been recorded on this platform highlighting the negative effects of the unfair PSPO restrictions placed on law abiding dog owners.

For the 2023 Dog Related Public Spaces Protection Order Consultation we are asking Dorset Council to ensure fair access for everyone (abled bodied and disabled) to the Lyme Regis Town Sandy Beach in light of the alternative beaches being unsuitable for those with mobility issues or disabilities.

Highlighting the empty Lyme Regis Beach due to the dogs PSPO restrictions Dorset Council

Looking for a compromise, dogs off leads before 10am and after 6pm between 1 May to 30 Sept instead of the 5 month ban of dogs.
