RSPCA Beds South & Mid Herts Branch

RSPCA Beds South & Mid Herts Branch We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome many animals each year in South Bedfordshire and Mid Hertfordshire. Welcome to the Bedfordshire South Branch of the RSPCA.

We are an independent charity which carries out vital animal welfare work throughout the local area, from Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard through to Ampthill, Toddington and Flitwick. We do not receive government funding and as Beds South RSPCA is a separately registered branch of the RSPCA we are responsible for raising funds locally. We also rely on the efforts of our volunteers and the

generosity of local people to continue with our work. One example of this vital work is the Branch’s fostering scheme, which was revived in November 2004 in an effort to assist the Inspectors with the temporary boarding of animals. Our team of dedicated volunteers throughout the local area look after cats and kittens, rabbits, and guinea pigs as family pets on behalf of the Branch until we can find them a new home. We hope that through the pages of our new website you can learn more about the work that we do, about the animals that we care for, and how you too can contribute to animal welfare.

Good News 🗞️ Monday 😀 We found our loving FUREVER home together 🤩😍

🐾 Why we adopt kittens in pairs

Takeaway: Kittens learn how to be confident, well‑adjusted adult cats from each other — something humans simply can’t replicate. Pairing prevents behaviour problems, reduces stress, and gives them healthier emotional and social development.

Cute aren't they? Another happy ending 💙

💛 Tonight’s Rescue in Progress…

Out this evening trying to safely bring a mama cat and her three kittens into care. As you’ll see in the video, we were so close — the kittens were confident enough to explore the trap in pairs, which is a brilliant sign that they feel safe around us.

In situations like this, we always aim to secure the kittens first. Once they’re safe, mum’s natural instinct to reach them usually brings her straight into the trap. But when two kittens go in together, it can leave one baby still outside with mum… and that’s when she may decide to move the last kitten to a new hiding place.

So tonight, instead of pushing our luck, we chose patience.Patience keeps families together.Patience prevents panic.Patience means we’ll get them all — safely, kindly, and without trauma.

We’re close. Really close. And we’ll be back out again until this little family is safe, warm, and on the path to a better life.

Wish us luck 🤞🏼

🐰 Why Microchipping Your Bunnies 🐇 🐰 Matters More Than You Think

The pictures show our baby bunnies being microchipped. We chip all our bunnies and would encourage all owners to follow suit.

Losing a rabbit is every owner’s nightmare — they’re fast, silent, and can squeeze through gaps you didn’t even know existed. Microchipping is the single most reliable way to make sure your bunny gets back home safely.

At our branch, we see far too many rabbits found wandering with no chip, no details, and no way to reunite them. It’s heartbreaking and completely avoidable.

🌟 What microchipping does

Permanent ID — chips can't usually get lost

Quick scanning — vets, rescues, and wardens can identify your bunny in seconds

Legal protection — proof of ownership if your rabbit is stolen or wrongly rehomed

Emergency contact — if your bunny is injured, you can be reached immediately

🐇 Rabbits are escape artists

Even indoor buns can slip out during deliveries, garden time, or a moment of distraction. Outdoor buns can dig, chew, or bolt when startled. A microchip is their safety net.

💚 It’s quick, safe, and inexpensive

A tiny chip, the size of a grain of rice, placed under the skin in seconds. No ongoing maintenance — just keep your details up to date.

🏡 If you love them, chip them

Microchipping saves lives, prevents heartbreak, and ensures your bunny always has a way home.

If your rabbit isn’t chipped yet, please book them in with your vet. It’s one of the kindest things you can do for them.

😻 Charlie aka Lennox Has Found His Forever Home!

From brave explorer Lennox to much‑loved family member Charlie — our little wildlife correspondent has officially begun his next chapter, and it’s everything we hoped for and more.

Today we’re celebrating a very special adoption.Charlie has gone to a home we already know, trust, and admire — a family who previously adopted from us and have once again opened their hearts with kindness, patience, and genuine love.

This is the kind of adopter every rescue dreams of.The kind who sees the soul behind the story. The kind who understands that rescue animals don’t just need a home — they need the right home.

And Charlie has exactly that now.

He’ll have safety. He’ll have freedom. He’ll have gentle humans who understand him.And he’ll have all the love he’s ever deserved.

From the hedgerows he once patrolled to the cosy life he now steps into, this boy’s journey has been extraordinary — and it ends exactly where it should: in a home that truly sees him.

All the love in the world, Charlie.Go live your best life, sweetheart. We’ll miss you, but knowing you’re safe and adored is everything.

All the best, Charlie!!! 😻💛

🐹💚 A New Start for Our Little Piggies (SORRY SOME GRAPHIC CONTENT)

From neglect… to safety, softness and second chances.

Sometimes rescue work brings us the happiest moments — and sometimes it brings the heartbreaking ones.

Recently we were asked to support a guinea pig owner who clearly loved their pets deeply, but had reached a point where they could no longer meet their needs. Multiple piggies were living in very small cages, with overgrown claws, matted fur, and signs of long‑term unmet care. This wasn’t cruelty. This was someone overwhelmed, struggling, and doing the best they could with what they had left.

And that’s why we do this work.

Over the past few days, one of our volunteers gently supported the owner, step by step, until the last of the piggies were safely signed over to us.To everyone involved — thank you. Your kindness changed lives.

Once in our care, the piggies received everything they’d been missing:

Claws trimmed

Matted fur carefully removed

Warm baths

Clean, spacious indoor setups

Soft bedding, fresh veg, and quiet, calm foster homes

They are now safe, comfortable, and finally able to rest.A new life begins today.

💛 When is it “too much”?

Knowing when you can’t cope anymore is not failure — it’s love.It takes courage to say “I need help.”If you’re struggling with your pets, please reach out early. We will always treat you with dignity and compassion.

🌿 What guinea pigs need

Guinea pigs are gentle, social animals who require:

Large indoor enclosures (minimum 120–150cm)

Company of their own kind

Daily fresh veg and unlimited hay

Regular grooming and nail trims

Clean, dry bedding

Time, attention, and space to explore

If you’re unsure whether your setup is right, we’re always happy to advise.

🐾 Photos of their transformation will follow

You’ll soon meet these little ones — now clean, cosy, and discovering what comfort feels like.

A huge thank you to our fosters who opened their homes and hearts.A huge thank you to the owner who trusted us.And a huge thank you to you — our community — for caring.

🐾 Bella Has Found Her Forever Home — And Her Brave Little Heart Is Finally Safe

Some stories stay with you forever.Bella’s is one of them.

When Bella first came into our care, she was a shadow of a cat — silent, trembling, and carrying the weight of a past no animal should ever endure. She had been hated in the place she should have been loved. She flinched at hands, froze at objects, and hid from even the gentlest movement. Her whole world had taught her that people were something to fear.

But then something extraordinary happened.

A foster stepped forward — patient, steady, and willing to love her exactly as she was. No pressure. No expectations. Just safety, warmth, and time.

And slowly… beautifully… Bella began to bloom.

A tiny blink.A brave step.A soft purr she didn’t mean to let slip.A moment where she didn’t run — she stayed.

Over the past few months, Bella has learned that hands can be kind, voices can be soft, and the world can be gentle after all. She rediscovered toys. She rediscovered trust. She rediscovered herself.

And today, we get to say the words we’ve been waiting for:

💛 Bella is home. Truly, finally home.

She has found her loving forever family — people who see her, cherish her, and will never let her be afraid again. She is living her best life now, safe and adored, exactly as she always deserved.

To her foster: you changed her world.
To her adopters: you are her miracle.
To Bella: thank you for being brave enough to try again.

Some cats don’t just get adopted — they get reborn. Bella is one of them.
