🐾 Can Diabetes Be Prevented in Cats & Dogs? 🐾

While not all cases of diabetes can be avoided, there are important steps pet owners can take to reduce the risk and support long-term health.

🥗 Maintain a healthy weight
Excess weight is one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes in pets. Feeding appropriate portions and avoiding frequent treats can make a big difference.

🍽️ Feed a balanced, species-appropriate diet
High-quality nutrition supports healthy metabolism. Avoid sudden diet changes and steer clear of feeding human foods unless advised by your vet.

🏃 Encourage regular activity
Daily play and exercise help pets use insulin more effectively and maintain stable energy levels — especially important for indoor cats and older dogs.

📅 Routine veterinary check-ups
Regular health checks allow early detection of hormonal or metabolic changes before diabetes develops. Senior pets benefit from routine blood and urine testing.

⚠️ Manage underlying conditions
Conditions such as pancreatitis, hormonal disorders, or long-term steroid use can increase diabetes risk. Ongoing veterinary guidance is key.

❤️ Prevention starts at home
Small, consistent lifestyle choices can have a lasting impact on your pet’s health and wellbeing.

If you’d like tailored advice on diet, weight management, or preventive care for your pet, our team is always happy to help.🐶🐱

🐾 Diabetes in Cats & Dogs: What Every Pet Owner Should Know 🐾

Diabetes isn’t just a human condition — it can affect our pets too. Diabetes mellitus occurs when a pet’s body can’t properly regulate blood sugar levels, either because it doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use it effectively.

🔍 Early signs to watch for include:
- Increased thirst and urination
- Increased appetite with weight loss
- Lethargy or weakness
- Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs)
- Poor coat condition (more common in cats)
Catching these signs early is incredibly important. When diabetes is diagnosed promptly, pets can live long, happy, and comfortable lives with the right care.

💉 How is diabetes treated?
Treatment often includes:
- Regular insulin injections
- A carefully managed diet
- Consistent feeding and exercise routines
- Ongoing monitoring of blood glucose levels
Every pet’s treatment plan is tailored specifically to their needs.

🏠 Advice for pet owners:
- Keep feeding and insulin times consistent
- Never change food or medication without veterinary advice
- Watch closely for changes in behavior, appetite, or drinking habits
- Attend regular check-ups to ensure treatment is working well

❤️ The good news: With dedication and proper veterinary support, diabetic pets can continue to enjoy a great quality of life.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs or have concerns about your pet, please don’t hesitate to contact us — we’re here to help every step of the way.

🐶🐱 Your pet’s health is our priority.

🎄 Christmas Pet Safety Reminder 🐶🐱

The festive season is a wonderful time for families – including our pets! However, some Christmas foods, toys, and decorations can be dangerous for cats and dogs. Please keep the following in mind to help keep your pets safe and healthy:

🍗 Christmas Foods to Avoid

Many traditional treats are toxic or harmful to pets, including:
- Chocolate
- Grapes, raisins, sultanas & currants (often found in puddings and mince pies)
- Onions, garlic & leeks (including cooked or powdered forms)
- Alcohol
- Xylitol (a sweetener in sugar-free sweets, gum, and baked goods)
- Cooked bones & fatty leftovers – these can splinter or cause pancreatitis

🎁 Toy Safety

- Avoid toys with small, detachable parts that could be swallowed
- Be cautious with string, ribbon, tinsel, and stuffing, which can cause serious intestinal blockages
- Supervise pets with new toys and discard any that become damaged

✨ Decorations & Plants

- Keep fairy lights and electrical cords out of reach
- Secure Christmas trees to prevent tipping
- Avoid or place out of reach toxic plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, holly, and lilies (especially dangerous for cats)
- Shattered baubles can cause cuts to paws and mouths

If you think your pet has eaten something harmful or is acting unwell, please contact your vet immediately.

From all of us at Medivet Lurgan, we wish you and your pets a safe and happy Christmas! 🎅🐾
