❤️ May - Nurse Awareness Month - Lucy ❤️

What did Lucy say when asked what her favourite area of nursing is?...

“I qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2022, but I’ve been working in the veterinary field since leaving school, so caring for animals has always been a huge part of my life.

I joined Black Sheep Vets in 2021 and later moved over to Elev, where I now work emergency and critical care shifts.

I enjoy all aspects of nursing, but I have a particular passion for emergency and critical care. I love the fast-paced nature of ECC and the adrenaline that comes with it, especially when caring for our most critically ill patients.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a very poorly patient recover and go home to their family. At the same time, I feel truly honoured to support families through the more difficult moments, helping make the process as gentle and compassionate as possible when they have to say goodbye.

Every patient I care for is treated as if they were my own. They receive lots of TLC alongside their medical care, as I believe comfort, kindness, and attention play a huge role in recovery.“

❤️May - Nurse Awareness Month - Natalie❤️

Meet Natalie and see what she enjoys about her job...

"I started nursing in 2015 and qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2019.

The part of nursing I enjoy most is medical management and inpatient care. I really like the challenge of troubleshooting cases and thinking through different ways to support my patients and help them recover. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them improve, especially when you’ve been closely involved in their care.

Working long night shifts also gives me the opportunity to truly get to know my patients, their personalities, their quirks, and what helps keep them comfortable. Being a solo nurse alongside one vet means I can give them that extra time and attention which I really value. "

Emergencies like Reggie’s are why we exist. Vaccinations are why they shouldn’t have to.

Head to Black Sheep Vets to get your pup protected.

🐾 Meet Reggie.

A few weeks ago, Reggie came to us as a very poorly pup. He was fighting Parvovirus, one of the most serious and aggressive diseases a young dog can face.

Our team got straight to work.

Reggie is home, bouncing around, and doing exactly what puppies should do.

Parvovirus is a brutal illness. It attacks the gut, causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, and can be fatal, especially in young or unvaccinated dogs. It spreads incredibly easily, surviving on surfaces, grass, and even your shoes for months.

But it is almost entirely preventable.

Vaccinating your puppy on time and keeping up with boosters is the single most important thing you can do to protect them from Parvo. Timing really matters here. Puppies need their primary course completed before they're fully protected, which is why we always recommend not waiting.

If your pup is due for their vaccinations, or you're not sure where they're up to, give us a call. We'd love to see them, preferably before they ever have to meet Parvo.

As spring arrives across Lincolnshire, our team at East Lincs Emergency has one important message for every pet owner: know the signs of heatstroke before you need to.

Because when it happens, there is no time to Google it.

Heatstroke can develop rapidly, in a parked car, a warm conservatory, or after a burst of exercise on a sunny afternoon. Here's what demands immediate action:

🔴 Heavy, rapid, or laboured panting
🔴 Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
🔴 Disorientation, stumbling, or glazed eyes
🔴 Hot or dry skin, especially around the ears
🔴 Vomiting, seizures, or loss of consciousness

If you see these signs, do not wait.

Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately. Apply cool, not ice-cold water to their coat and paw pads. Offer very small sips of water. Then call East Lincs Emergency straight away.

We are open every hour of every day. Our team is trained, equipped, and ready.

Enjoy the spring sunshine. We'll be here if you need us. 💙

🚨 Is it an emergency or can it wait? A quick guide for worried pet owners.

We know that panicked 2am feeling, your pet seems off, and you're not sure whether to call or wait until morning. So here's a simple breakdown to help you decide.

🔴 Contact us immediately if your pet is:

Struggling to breathe or choking
Showing signs of poisoning
Collapsed or unconscious
Having a seizure lasting more than 2 minutes
Bleeding severely, and it won't stop
Unable to urinate (particularly in cats, this can be life-threatening)
Showing a bloated or swollen abdomen

🟡 Monitor at home, but call if things worsen:

Vomiting or diarrhoea once or twice
Minor cuts or grazes
Limping but still putting weight on the leg
Quieter than usual, but still eating and drinking

Our honest advice? If you're unsure, just call us. No question is too small, and no concern is worth losing sleep over. That's exactly what we're here for, day or night, 365 days a year.
