How do we keep your chicken safe under anaesthetic?
We intubate them after an anaesthetic induction so we can deliver oxygen and gas anaesthetic directly into the air sacs. We keep them warm - with heat pads and heat keepers, otherwise they will reduce in temperature quickly. And we monitor their heart rates using a Doppler machine - so we can hear any changes to rate and rhythm as soon as it happens. And most importantly, we have a qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse monitoring breathing, heart rate, temperature and reflexes continuously! 👍🏻🩺

Today it was my turn to treat a chicken as Mabel came in to have an annoying lump removed from her beak. Performing surgery on a bird uses the same principles as doing it on a cat or dog. but as for the anaesthetic and monitoring - now that is a whole different issue! Eleanor one of our RVN’s has a huge amount of experience with anaesthetising small pets, birds and reptiles and as usual she did a sterling job today with Mabel who had a lovely sleep whilst we operated and was soon nibbling bird seed once she was back round! Thank you, Eleanor, for your experience x ⭐️

I went to film an introduction to our Pinfold Poultry Community page with Mike Clark at the Vet School Chicken coop today! Unfortunately we need to do a second take - as the ladies were so interested they kept making us laugh and interrupting!
Take two will be filmed later in the week - but in the meantime - if your pet chickens or poultry need the Vet, our first Pinfold Poultry Clinic will be next week on Wednesday 11th February- so give us a ring to book in!
Please share! People really struggle to find Vets with a specialist interest in Backyard Poultry - and we are so lucky to be able to offer this service Pinfold Vets - East Leake & Keyworth 👍🏻🐓🐣

We now have a collection bin at East Leake for

Vets in the Community was set up in 2012 as a project co-ordinated by students to provide free routine veterinary care for the pets of homeless and vulnerably housed people in Nottingham.

Clinics are co-ordinated and staffed by vet students from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, supervised by fully qualified vets and veterinary nurses.

Their services rely on fundraising and grants, as well as generous donations which they hand out at their clinics.

If you have any unopened food, treats, pet beds or blankets, toys or pet accessories, please drop them into our donation station.

Thank you 🙏

Welcome to the Pinfold Vets Poultry Community page! In recent years keeping chickens, other poultry and game birds has become increasingly popular –with chickens being the UK's 4th most common pet. As a Veterinary Practice we are very fortunate to be Clinical Associates of the Nottingham Vet School and therefore have access to expertise when it comes to caring and treating your feathered friends.
This page has been created as a forum for our pet poultry and gamebird owners to come together and find out more about our Pinfold Poultry Clinics with Mike Clark. We will also be monitoring the page and can respond to posts asking for husbandry advice.
Mike Clark is Lorna's husband but also a poultry vet. He has been a partner in a large mixed practice in Yorkshire where he was part of a 10 vet poultry team. He is now clinical associate professor in poultry medicine and agribusiness at Nottingham Vet School and has Government and pharmaceutical industry advisory roles.
