The Wins That Truly Matter: More Than Just a Rosette

"If you work on something a little bit every day, you end up with something that is massive.”

This quote perfectly captures the spirit of Smudge and Emma, an incredible agility team. They consistently put in the effort, and it shows in their amazing wins at Bee Happy IDA shows and KC events!

Emma’s secret? She always shows up for Smudge in the ring, guiding him with care. After every run, no matter the faults or eliminations , she celebrates the positives. You’ll hear her cheering, "Smudge made the contacts!" or "He nailed that difficult weave entry!" Sometimes, she'll even "sacrifice" a win to work on a specific skill in the moment. This approach flourishes at our shows, as Emma herself says she feels given the space to train without the pressure to be perfect. This means training the application of skills doesn't stop once you're competing!

Remember, your dog might ace their skills at home, but practicing those same skills in a new environment – around different people, more dogs, and unfamiliar equipment – is a huge leap. It's about helping them transfer what they know to a competition setting, even with your own nerves in the mix!

So, take it slow. Allow your dog to practice their skills in these new, exciting environments. Chase the wins that mean more than any rosette – the small breakthroughs, the joy in every tiny step forward. Because those small acts truly add up to something massive!

Here's a fun and easy tip you can try on your next dog walk!

When you're in a safe, off-lead area, have a go at **hide-and-seek** with your dog. To start, have your walking partner hold your dog so they can see where you go. Don't go too far at first, then start calling them. Really celebrate the entire time they're making their way to you, and pay them with their favorite food or toy when they reach you.

As they get good at this, gradually increase the distance. Remember, once you're in position, start calling them so they can at least hear where you are. Having this much fun during a walk will stimulate their brains and strengthen their positive association with you!

Comment below on how you get on!

When you're starting out in dog agility, or any kind of dog training, it's easy for setbacks to knock your confidence. But here's the thing: you and your dog are both on a steep learning curve! You're mastering the positive reinforcement approach plus its mechanics, and your dog is learning a whole new language.

Naturally, some moments won't go to plan. There are so many variables in training, and failed attempts are inevitable. However, there's often more to learn from a moment that goes "wrong" than from one that goes perfectly. These "failures" are actually valuable fuel for your progress!

The trick is to look at *why* something didn't work. What can you change to help your dog succeed next time? The insights you gain from these challenges are incredibly valuable; they empower you with a deeper understanding of your dog in that specific moment.

Of course, we want to keep frustration to a minimum for our dogs too, so try to prevent too many failures in a row. But when you do hit a bump, assess what happened, implement a change in your next try, and pay attention to the results. Value that information! It's how you'll build a deeper understanding of your dog, yourself, and your connection with them. Get excited about this process, and you'll soon be communicating like a pro team!

Want a more confident and capable dog? When training, it's tempting to physically guide them over obstacles or through exercises. We think we're helping, but it actually hinders their learning!

When you push or pull your dog, they can't learn using their own balance and body awareness. They'll start to rely on your physical support, rather than truly understanding the task themselves.

The secret? Allow them to learn through trial and error! And instead of manipulating your dog, manipulate the environment. Set up the training space so the correct choice is the most obvious one (e.g., the tunnel is the only clear path).

This approach builds incredible problem-solving skills, confidence, and a deep understanding in your dog. Let them figure it out, and watch them shine!

Did you know that when it comes to dog agility, higher jumps aren't always better? At Pinkfox Agility, we really focus on what's best for your dog, and that includes how high they jump.

It's true, dogs are amazing athletes and can often clear some pretty high obstacles! But if they're only practicing their jump skills once a week, the specific muscles needed for safe jumping and landing might not be strong enough for a full training session. This can lead to fatigue, muscle strain, and even injury.

That's why, unless you're aiming for competitive agility, we keep our jumps on the smaller side. We want your dog to absolutely love their time with us, without the risk of feeling overwhelmed or getting tired too quickly. Your dog's comfort, enjoyment, and overall well-being are always our top priority at Pinkfox Agility training.

At Pinkfox Agility, we're often asked about jump heights, and it's a great question! While many dogs can clear impressive obstacles, we believe that just because they can, doesn't always mean they should.

Jumping, especially high jumps, uses muscles not typically engaged in a dog's daily life. If a dog is only practicing jumping once a week, these muscles won't be developed enough to sustain an entire training session without fatigue. This significantly increases the risk of injury or muscle strain.

That's why, at Pinkfox, unless you're specifically training for competition, you'll see smaller jumps in our classes. Our priority is your dog's physical and emotional well-being. We want them to enjoy agility training without getting overwhelmed or fatigued quickly by high obstacles in a sequence. Happy, healthy dogs make the best agility partners!
