This is Toyah and she had a very eventful Friday night!
Her lovely owners have given us permission to share her story with you, to hopefully help future kitties in need.
Toyah is only a young cat and, as you can imagine, she is into everything. Unbeknownst to her owners, she had the grand idea to eat the plastic seal that had been removed from a jar of sauce.
The first sign of trouble was that she started to vomit unexpectedly. Her family realised this was unusual and contacted us for advice. As the vomiting was sporadic and she was still eating and acting okay we advised to monitor and call back it if continues (as gastrointestinal issues are not uncommon in young cats and can sometimes just get better).
Unfortunately, Toyah continued to vomit and instead of risking waiting for the weekend she came straight down. We see foreign bodies in cats far less frequently than in dogs, but her owners were more cautious due to her chewing everything and anything she can get hold of.
Rachael and Hannah were able to see her straight away and after examination, which suggested she had a painful abdomen, we were given consent to take X-rays, which suggested a potential blockage in her small intestine.
Surgery was performed that evening, the foreign body was removed safely and, as seen in the pictures below, she is recovering well.
The moral of the story is - don't wait if you are worried about your pets as even the smallest, most unlikely things, can prove life threatening if left for too long.
Well done to her owners for bringing her in to see us so rapidly and to the team for a safe, life-saving surgery and for staying late after normal hours to make sure she was okay.
Thank you to Toyah's mum for allowing us to share her story.
