Settling out and about 😇

The ability to relax on cue out and about is so important to reduce stress for us and our dogs. Here are 3 top tips:

✅ Make sure you have a super strong "settle on your bed" behaviour at home 🏠

✅ Start easy - a quick coffee stop ☕, not a three course meal!

✅ Bring lots of treats and a comfy bed/mat 🛏

Beautiful Buster 🥰

Buster's family got in touch with me as he had become nervous of having his nails clipped and getting in the car. He was also barking at passing cars and bikes.

Together we have worked on:

✅ Consent-based handling to teach Buster that he can say 'no thank you' without escalating to growling or nipping. Dogs who are allowed choice are much more likely to opt in to handling procedures such as nail clipping, grooming or vet assessments.

✅ We taught Buster to use a scratch board so that he can easily keep his front claws trim.

✅ We started building a positive association with moving towards and getting in the car, without bribing him as dogs very quickly become suspicious of this! He progressed from refusing to move anywhere near the car to enthusiastically jumping his front feet in, all in a short 10-minute session. His owners now have the skills to continue building this positive association at Buster's pace.

✅ I showed Buster's family a simple technique to build Buster's disengagement skills so he can disengage from passing cars and engage instead with his owner.

It's been a joy to work with Buster's lovely family 💜
