🐾💚Meet Patsy💚🐾

This week the beautiful Patsy came to our surgeon Jakub for a lap spay.

Laparoscopic ovariectomy (keyhole spay) offers several advantages over traditional open surgery. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, post-operative discomfort is significantly reduced. The surgical incisions are typically only 0.5–1 cm in length, compared with 6–15 cm for a conventional spay, which can contribute to a faster and more comfortable recovery.

Most patients are able to return to their normal activity levels sooner. While traditional spay procedures generally require 10–14 days of restricted exercise, dogs undergoing laparoscopic surgery typically need only around 5 days of rest.

The procedure is also associated with a lower risk of surgical complications, particularly bleeding. This is due to the enhanced visualisation provided by the laparoscopic camera system and the use of advanced vessel-sealing equipment, which allows for precise and controlled surgery.

Patsy recovered well from her surgery and was up and about for cuddles, bum scratches and food with a happy waggy tail in no time!

We wish Patsy a very speedy recovery 💚🐾

🐾Tendonectomy 🐾

Sadie was presented to our surgeon, Eleni, after her owner noticed a persistent limp affecting her left forelimb. A painful corn had also developed on one of her paw pads. Following a thorough clinical examination, Eleni discussed the available treatment options with Sadie’s owner.

After assessment, Eleni recommended a tenotomy procedure to address the corn. This surgical technique involves cutting or removing a portion of a tendon to relieve pain, correct abnormal movement, or reduce pressure on a joint. While tenotomy can be used to treat several conditions, it is widely recognised as an effective advanced treatment for painful paw pad corns.

Prior to surgery, radiographs (X-rays) and a focused ultrasound examination of the affected forelimb were performed to rule out fractures and identify any potential foreign bodies.

The procedure was completed successfully, and Sadie recovered uneventfully from her general anaesthetic. She was discharged home the same day to continue her recovery with her family.

Eleni will continue to monitor Sadie’s progress through scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure her recovery remains on track and that the surgical site heals appropriately.

🐾Meet the beautiful Shola.🐾

Shola was presented to Eleni after sustaining a hind limb fracture following a fall from a first-floor height. Initial radiographs performed by her primary veterinary practice confirmed the fracture, and she was subsequently referred to Advanced Vet Care for further assessment and treatment.

Shola and her family attended a consultation with our surgeon, Eleni. Following a thorough examination, Eleni determined that surgical intervention would provide the best outcome for fracture repair and recovery.

Shola was admitted to the hospital and underwent general anaesthesia for fracture repair surgery. Orthopaedic pins and wire were used to stabilise the fracture and restore alignment of the affected limb.

Post-operative radiographs confirmed satisfactory implant placement and fracture reduction. Shola recovered well from the procedure and will return for regular follow-up examinations to monitor her healing progress. We wish Shola a smooth and speedy recovery.

🐾 Loki’s Story: Complex Kidney Surgery with a Positive Outcome

Loki, a 10-year-old cat, was referred to Advanced Vetcare London after his owners noticed he had gone off his food and developed an unusual abdominal lump.

Following advanced imaging and tissue sampling at our Streatham Hill sister practice, results indicated a tumour affecting Loki’s left kidney, with findings suggestive of renal carcinoma. Importantly, his right kidney appeared to be functioning well, meaning surgery could offer him a meaningful chance of recovery.💚

Our soft tissue surgery team performed a complex nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney and tumour. The size of the tumour made this a technically demanding procedure, requiring careful pre-operative planning and precise work around major blood vessels including the aorta and caudal vena cava.

Loki recovered well from surgery and even began eating just a few hours after waking from anaesthesia, a very encouraging sign following major abdominal surgery. He remained hospitalised overnight for monitoring, intravenous fluids and supportive care before being discharged with a tailored recovery plan to support his remaining kidney.

Loki’s case highlights the importance of advanced diagnostics, specialist surgical expertise and close collaboration between referral and primary care teams. In selected cases, where disease is confined to one organ and the other is functioning well, surgery can be truly life-changing.

💚 Eleni performed a FHO this week 💚

This week at Advanced Vet Care, one of our surgeons, Eleni, performed a Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO).

Shezada was admitted to our 24-hour hospital after his owner noticed lameness in his left hind leg. The team carried out radiographic imaging, which revealed a capital physeal fracture affecting the left hind limb.

Following a detailed discussion with the owner, Eleni recommended proceeding with an FHO procedure, and a treatment plan was agreed upon.

An FHO involves the surgical removal of the head and neck of the femur, leaving the hip socket (acetabulum) without direct bone contact. Over time, scar tissue forms around the area, creating a “false joint” (pseudoarthrosis) supported by the surrounding muscles. This allows the patient to regain comfortable, pain-free mobility.

Post-operative radiographs confirmed that an appropriate amount of bone had been removed, and Shezada recovered well following surgery. He has now been discharged home to continue strict rest and recovery with his family and will return for a follow-up appointment with Eleni in the coming days to monitor his healing progress.

🐾 Partial Arthrodesis Procedure 🐾

This week, Jakub performed a partial arthrodesis on the beautiful Vita.

Vita was referred to us after sustaining an injury to her left hind limb when she jumped over a fence, resulting in persistent lameness. Following an initial consultation and assessment with Jakub, surgery was recommended as the best course of treatment.

Prior to surgery, Vita was given a sedative before being placed under a general anaesthetic. Pre-operative radiographs were then taken to allow for detailed surgical planning and to assess the extent of the injury.

Jakub performed a partial arthrodesis — a joint fusion procedure designed to stabilise damaged or arthritic joints while preserving as much functional range of motion as possible. This procedure is most commonly performed on the carpus (wrist) or tarsus (ankle/hock) and involves removing damaged cartilage before fusing the affected bones together.

Following surgery, the team obtained post-operative radiographs to confirm correct placement and stability. Once the team was satisfied with the results, Vita recovered comfortably from her procedure.

Vita has now returned home with her family and will continue her recovery with strict cage rest, pain relief medication, and regular follow-up appointments with Jakub.

The team at Advanced vet care with Vita a comfortable recovery and look forward to seeing her at her post surgery check ups 💚

Fracture Repair for Coco 🐾

This week at Advanced Vet Care, our surgeon Eleni performed a fracture repair on the lovely Coco.

Coco was referred to us after a fall resulted in a Salter-Harris Type II fracture. Following her consultation with Eleni, she was admitted for surgery.

Coco underwent a general anaesthetic, and pre-operative X-rays were taken to provide detailed imaging and allow accurate measurement of the bones so the correct implants could be selected for her repair. Eleni then used pins to carefully realign the bones into the correct position.

Post-operative X-rays were performed to confirm accurate implant placement and ensure the bones were properly aligned.

We’re pleased to say Coco recovered well from surgery and has now returned home to her family. She will be on strict crate rest and medication during her recovery, and Eleni will see her again in a few days for her first post-operative check-up.

We wish Coco a smooth and speedy recovery 💙

💚💚 LAP SPAYS!!! 💚💚

At Advanced Vet Care, we are pleased to offer laparoscopic spays (lap spays) as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spay surgery.

A laparoscopic spay is performed using keyhole surgical techniques, allowing our veterinary surgeons to carry out an ovariectomy through small incisions in the abdomen. Using a specialised camera and advanced surgical equipment, we are able to achieve excellent visualisation of the ovaries while minimising surgical trauma.

Compared with a conventional open spay procedure, laparoscopic spays are associated with reduced tissue trauma, less post-operative discomfort, and a faster recovery time. This makes the procedure particularly beneficial for young, active dogs, as it allows for a more comfortable recovery and a shorter period of restricted activity following surgery.

Spaying your dog has some major health benefits. It can eliminate and reduce the risks of:

🐶Risk of Pyometra which can be a fatal uterine infection
🐶Cancers
🐶Tumours of mammary glands
🐶Prevent unwanted litters and complications that can arise from this
🐶It can also have behavioural benefits but this also coincides with behavioural training.

At Advanced Vet Care we currently have two Veterinary Surgeons who are able to perform lap spays.

If you would like to book in for a Lap Spay please fill in one of our forms and a member staff will contact you with regard to booking your dog in with us and answer any questions you may have!
