I keep seeing and hearing of “reactivity training” that consists of flooding dogs, dragging them around on slip leads and prong collars with no prior conditioning, forcing them into close proximity with other dogs and then calling it fixed because the dog eventually stops reacting.

But a dog being quiet doesn’t automatically mean the dog is calm.

A lot of reactive dogs are living in a constant state of hyper vigilance, stress and conflict. If the only goal is to stop the outward reaction, you’re missing the actual problem.

Real rehabilitation should change the dog’s emotional state, not just make the dog look more obedient.

This isn’t the finished result for Lyra and we still have work to do, especially in closer proximity and on lead. But the fact that she can now move through the environment off lead, disengage naturally and exist in a noticeably healthier headspace after just 9 days is huge.

Lyra’s reactivity comes from both fear and frustration.

Nervous of the world but underneath it all is a dog that genuinely enjoys interaction, freedom, and being around other dogs and people.

After just a few off lead decompression walks with my dogs and time spent switching off in the Hertfordshire countryside, we’ve already started to see a different dog emerge.

Now it’s time to build confidence, emotional stability, and teach Lyra how to navigate the world calmly.

Stay tuned for Lyra’s journey. 🖤

If your dog only listens to you when you have food on you, it’s because they’ve learned to respond to the picture of a training session, not the command itself.

Dogs are incredibly good at pattern recognition. They know when rewards are available, even if you’re not actually using them.

That’s why it’s important to practice obedience without obvious rewards from time to time. But it’s equally important that you have the communication and accountability in place to guide the dog through the wrong decision when they choose not to listen.

Otherwise, most dogs quickly learn that obedience is optional the second rewards disappear.
