Cuddles with Kelly 🫂 (please ignore the surgery sandals)

These 2 gorgeous girls joined us today for their procedures & stole everyone’s hearts. They sat so politely wagging their tails every time someone came to stroke them & enjoyed a good run around prep 🌸🌺🌼

Gorgeous little Nina joined us today for a routine procedure. This is the best picture we could get of her as despite her anaesthetic a few hours ago, she’s desperate to jump out her kennel & get back to exploring! 😹 we’re going to miss you sweet girl 🌸

“Get them wet & get them to the vet” ☀️🌡️🐾Let’s talk about heat stroke.

With a heatwave weekend upon us, it’s incredibly important to keep our furry friends safe in the hot weather.

What is heat stroke? Heat stroke is a dangerously high body temperature caused by the body being unable to cool itself effectively that can be fatal.

Common causes include:• Hot weather• Being left in cars or poorly ventilated spaces• Walking or exercising in warm temperatures• Stress or overexcitement• Obesity• Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds.

Some signs of heat stroke:• Excessive panting• Weakness or wobbliness• Sticky, bright red or pale gums• Confusion or disorientation• Vomiting or diarrhoea• Collapse

How to help prevent heat stroke:• Walk dogs early morning or late evening• Always provide shade and fresh water• Avoid strenuous exercise in warm weather• Never leave pets in parked cars• Be extra cautious with elderly, overweight and flat-faced pets • Fans and cooling mats in the house

What should you do if you suspect heat stroke? “Get them wet & get them to the vet!”

The best outcomes are achieved if cooling has been started before making a trip to the vet. If there is the opportunity to do so quickly, start cooling immediately using very cold or any safe, available water that is cooler than your pet. You can pour water over them, use a hose, place them in shallow water, or ideally fully submerge their body. Submerging should only be attempted in conscious healthy animals where their airways are protected. If using a hose, let the water run until it is cold as the water in the tube will be hot initially.

You can also wring wet towels onto them, but never cover them completely with towels, as this can trap heat instead of allowing it to escape.

A myth that a lot of people have heard is to only use tepid water to avoid cooling your pet too quickly. Current evidence shows cold water immersion, where appropriate, provides the best outcomes. So remember, very cold water is safe!

Then continue cooling them during transport. If possible, contact us on your way so we can be prepared to act immediately 🌺🌸🌼

Neutering saves lives! 🐾

This is Johnny Maxon. Johnny was a stray cat who captured to heard of a kind stranger, who contacted the Cats Protection to help get him checked over, neutered & vaccinated.

Unneutered cats are more likely to roam, fight, & contribute to growing stray populations. These behaviours also increase the risk of serious diseases like FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), which are often spread through bites and close contact.

Thankfully, Johnny was negative for these diseases & will be far less likely to catch them now he is castrated.

By neutering your cat & supporting neutering for strays, you’re helping reduce suffering, prevent unwanted litters, and protect against life-threatening illness.

Johnny is now recovering in his allotment, with a house nearby he can now call his own 🌺🌸🌼

Mabel vs an insect 🐶 💥 🐜

This brave girl came in after a severe allergic reaction to a suspected ant bite, & thanks to her owner rushing her straight down (& calling ahead so we could be ready to act as soon as she arrived) we were able to treat her right away.

A few emergency medications & some ice packing with nurse Demi later, Mabel’s face was looking a lot more recognisable.

If you ever suspect an emergency, come straight down & if you’re able to, call us on your way so we can be set for your arrival.

Look how happy (& pretty) she looked back in her companions arms at discharge! 🌺🌸🌼

Meet the team! 🌺🌸🌼

Hi I’m Kelly-Anne, a Registered Veterinary nurse at Petals!

I have worked in the veterinary industry for 12 years. Before that, I volunteered with several animal charities. During that time I have welcomed a dog, many cats, and some guinea pigs into my life.

I have extensive experience working with stray and rescue animals. I have a particular interest in nurse consultations, helping owners feel confident with treatment plans and at-home care. I especially enjoy supporting our older patients and helping to improve and maintain their quality of life.

I am currently working towards a certificate in canine rehabilitation and hope to start a dermatology certificate to better help animals with skin issues, a problem we see very often!

I am a big film buff and go to the cinema at least twice a week! I also have a degree in art and enjoy painting and visiting galleries and shows.

Buffy showing us even the bravest girls still need their dinosaur teddy from time to time.

She was a joy to have in with us for the day & we look forward to seeing her back in a few days to ensure she’s recovering well 🌺
