🐾 Last week I met Rex, a gorgeous 7-month-old German Shepherd.

Like many adolescent dogs, he's keeping his family busy with pulling on the lead, barking at outside noises, and a recall that sometimes works… and sometimes doesn't.

We focused on meeting his needs with more mental enrichment, plus introduced training games to build up recall and loose-lead walking skills. Just one week later, his owner is already noticing less pulling on walks and a calmer response to noises at home. 💪🏻

I'm looking forward to seeing how Rex continues to progress as his training foundations grow. If you're navigating similar challenges with your own adolescent pup, I'd love to help. 🧡

Some training problems aren’t solved with more training - they're solved with a change of setup.

Last month I met a new rescue who wasn't touching her food. Her guardian had tried different brands, toppers, even hand feeding - but nothing worked.

So we switched things up. We moved her bowl to a quieter corner of the house, on a non-slip surface, and focused on creating a predictable, safe routine. Within days, she started eating more consistently.

The change wasn't about the food. It was about the environment. Where and how your dog experiences something can make the difference between struggle and success.

This applies to so much more than mealtimes:
✨ Learning to settle in the park
✨ Staying calm when visitors arrive
✨ Walking past other dogs without reacting

If the setup isn't right, training feels harder than it needs to. When we design the environment with the dog's needs in mind, we make space for them to learn, feel safe, and make better choices.

If you're feeling stuck with your dog, it might not be the training plan that needs adjusting - it might be the environment.

✨ Meet Coco, a 1-year-old rescue who recently arrived in the UK from Mauritius.

Like many young dogs, she's full of energy and curiosity, so in our consultation we looked at ways to guide her through those big adolescent behaviours like jumping up and mouthing. We introduced a marker word to make communication clearer, played "find it" as a calming sniffing activity, and rewarded the good choices she was already making.

We also talked through strategies for safe child-dog interactions, such as giving her young human a clear way to let Coco know when playtime is over.

Coco is such a bright, affectionate dog with lots of potential, and I'm excited to see how she continues to thrive with the right support. 💜

💡 Walks aren't just about physical exercise: they're one of the best ways to meet your dog's needs and strengthen your bond together. With a few tweaks, you can turn your outings into opportunities for confidence, focus, and connection.

Here are 5 simple ways to make your walks more enriching:

1️⃣ Let your pup choose the route. Within safe limits, give them more choice. Following their nose makes walks more satisfying and helps them feel in control.

2️⃣ Change your pace. Call their name, then walk faster or slower than usual. Reward when the lead stays loose; it's a playful way to keep attention on you.

3️⃣ Try some barkour! Encourage your pup to hop on a log, place paws on a wall, or weave around obstacles. Interacting with the environment builds confidence and curiosity.

4️⃣ Stop walking, start watching. Pause in a quiet spot and let them take in the world. Mark and reward when they calmly notice something new: it teaches focus and helps build confidenc.

5️⃣ Be more interesting than the environment. Play a game, bring out a toy, or do a little training. When you make yourself part of the fun, you become the best thing on the walk.

✨ Meeting your dog's needs doesn't have to mean doing more; it can be as simple as doing things differently. Enrichment on walks can help your dog feel calmer, more confident, and more connected to you.

🌸 Meet Rosie, a sweet 3-year-old Cyprus rescue looking for her forever home.

Rose (aka Rosie) has been settling into her foster home for about six weeks now. She's still figuring out how to feel safe around new people, so we explored gentle exposure, enrichment, and focus games to support that budding trust.

We also talked through ways to reduce stress around food and help her feel more secure. It's all part of the bigger picture: when dogs feel safe and understood, the rest starts to follow.

She's a gorgeous dog with so much potential. I'm excited to see how she continues to grow with the right support. 💜

Met lovely Pongo just over a week ago 🧡

He's a 3-year-old Cyprus rescue who's working through some uncertainty around other dogs and men. In our initial consultation, we focused on meeting his needs more fully, while building his impulse control to support emotional regulation.

Pongo's already making progress, and I’m excited to see how things unfold as his humans build up those skills with patience and consistency. 💪🏼

Every dog is different, and the right support can make all the difference. Get in touch if you're facing something similar!

💙 Meet Scylla, a gorgeous 1-year-old Greek rescue.

In our 1:1 sessions, we've been helping her build confidence in new people and new places, while also laying the foundations for essentials like recall - using focus and pattern games, gentle exposure, and enrichment. It's all connected: when a dog feels safe and understood, learning becomes much easier.

Training our pups means meeting them where they are, taking things at their pace, and building their skills step-by-step. Kind, consistent wins make a big difference. 💪🏼

🐾 It's !

While I love the idea of dogs in the office, here's something just as important: just because we CAN bring our dogs to busy places doesn't always mean we should.

Many dogs find noise, movement, and change overwhelming. And it's not just the office or pub that can tip them over: the journey to get there might have already stacked their stress. Especially if we haven't helped them build up to it gradually.

Before you pack the treats and water bowl, ask yourself:
1️⃣ Is my dog ready for this kind of environment?
2️⃣ Can they settle around people, sights, and sounds without getting stressed or shouty?
3️⃣ Have I rewarded calm behaviour at home enough to expect it in public?
4️⃣ Will they enjoy the space - temperature, noise, surfaces, and all?

If the answer's no, that's okay. Choosing not to bring your dog somewhere can be just as loving and responsible as choosing to include them. Let's normalise making choices that are right for our dogs, not just for what's convenient or cute for us. 💪🏻

😍 Meet 15 month old Morley!

At around 12-18 months, many dogs go through a 'teenage' phase where those lovely behaviours can suddenly go a bit... wobbly. (Thanks, hormones. 😅)

It's totally normal, and it's a great time to revisit the basics. Calm routines, clear guidance, and lots of positive reinforcement can help your adolescent pup feel more settled and make good choices as they navigate this tricky stage.

📢 It’s National Microchipping Month! So let’s talk about one of the tiniest but mightiest tools in responsible pet ownership.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and is typically placed between your dog's shoulder blades. It holds a unique ID number that helps reunite you if your dog ever goes missing. Since April 2016, it's a legal requirement for all dogs over 8 weeks in England, Scotland and Wales to be chipped and have up-to-date details. (Otherwise, you could face a £500 fine!)

✨ If you’re getting a puppy, make sure the breeder has chipped and registered them in their name. You then update the details when you bring your pup home.

✨ If you've adopted from overseas, ask your vet to scan the chip and check for errors or duplicates. It's rare, but it happens!

✨ And if you've moved house recently? Time to check those details are current!

🧡 It only takes a few minutes, but keeping your dog's microchip up to date could make all the difference in an emergency.

💡 How to make training more accessible for everyone.

If you live with a physical disability, chronic illness, or arthritis, using a treat pouch might not work for you. But that doesn’t mean reward-based training is off the table. With a few small adjustments, you can make training work for your body AND your dog.

And here’s the thing: these tips are useful for anyone whose mobility is limited, whether you're holding a baby, recovering from surgery, or wrangling dinner with a pup underfoot.

🧴 Use soft, easy-to-hold and squeeze treats like liver paste tubes. These let you deliver high-value rewards with one hand and minimal effort. No fiddly treats required!

📦 Set up reward stations around your home. Prepare small jars of treats at a reachable height so that you can capture good behaviour with zero prep.

🪵 Try smearing some dog-safe peanut butter on a long-handled spoon to reward your dog without having to bend or stretch.

Training should support your needs, not ignore them.
