As the leaves 🍁 change and temperatures drop, autumn becomes a wonderful time to enjoy long, refreshing walks with your dog. Cooler weather is often more comfortable for pets, and the season offers plenty of exciting new sights and smells for them to explore.
However, shorter days mean it’s important to adjust your walking routine to keep both you and your dog safe. Try to schedule your morning walks a little later and your evening walks earlier to make the most of the daylight.
If you do need to head out in the dark, take extra precautions: wear bright or reflective clothing, and consider a high-visibility coat for your dog. Light-up collars or harnesses are also a great way to ensure your dog is easily seen by drivers and cyclists.
For your pet’s safety, we always recommend keeping them on the lead after dark. In low visibility, dogs can become disoriented or wander off more easily, even in familiar areas.
Autumn also brings an increased risk of lungworm, a potentially serious parasite that can be picked up from infected slugs and snails—common on wet autumn days. Dogs may be exposed when sniffing in damp undergrowth or drinking from puddles, so it’s best to keep them close and supervised during walks.
The only effective way to protect against lungworm is regular worming treatment, prescribed by your vet. If you’re unsure whether your dog’s parasite control is up to date, don’t hesitate to get in touch—we're always happy to help you keep your pet safe and healthy all year round.
