Once upon a time, I had a dream: to create a beautifully curated retail space for dogs, inspired by a shop I’d discovered in Düsseldorf. Not another pet shop filled with practical necessities, but somewhere everything — from collars and leads to bowls and accessories — had been chosen for its design as well as its purpose.
But without retail experience or the funds to make it happen, the dream remained just that.
Then one day, a new shop appeared near us.
Love My Human.
I remember walking in and thinking: Someone has created the shop I had imagined. It was exquisite — full of beautiful pieces, interesting brands and thoughtfully selected products. Even the name was different.
And behind it all was Jenny Matthews.
I wanted to go back to the beginning and ask Jenny something I’ve wondered ever since I first walked through those doors…
How would you describe Love My Human to someone who has never visited?
Because to me, it has always been so much more than just a pet shop.
Even the name, Love My Human, is different. How did you come up with it?
What did you want the name to convey about the relationship between dogs and their humans?
When you first opened, did customers immediately understand your concept?
How has the response evolved over the years?
What inspired you to create something so different from the traditional pet shop?
What inspired you to create something so different from the traditional pet shop?
And then came Love My Human Townhouse. What inspired you to take the concept beyond retail?
Was this always part of your vision, or did it grow out of what you learned from the original shop?
What did you want to create with the Townhouse that didn’t already exist for dogs and their humans?
Looking back at what you’ve built, how close is Love My Human today to your original dream?
What dreams do you still have for Love My Human?
Is there another chapter waiting to be written?
A friendship formed for the love of our dogs.
