It’s always lovely to be back to doing my walks again after a weekend of training.
Orion especially loves getting to see and have fun with all of his friends.

The weather today was all over the place, windy and cold one minute and then sunny and warm the next. Thankfully I was done for the day by the time the heavens opened otherwise I may have ended up rather wet!

Henry (fox red lab) decided he was going to be the mature one today, whilst the girls and Orion all had zoomies. 🤣

I’m looking forward to having all of my K9 friends back for their walks this week. I do miss them when they are away on their holidays with their owners.
I think some of the dogs have more holidays than I do! 🤦‍♀️🤣

Probiotics are something that is very important to give your dogs.

Healthy dogs can greatly benefit from having probiotics added to their diet.
Dogs with health issues however must have probiotics added to their diet on a daily basis.
However they do need the right product in order to help resolve their health issues.

🧫🦠Understanding Probiotics 🦠🧫

Probiotics have had a lot of attention recently, with most people putting their pet on a probiotic under the advice of a medical professional, nutritionist or because they feel it’s essential for their pet’s health. This rundown will help give clarity on what probiotics are available, what their purpose is and prebiotics to help support their colonisation.

🦠 Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii, SB) 🦠

- Tropical yeast strain
- S. boulardii calms the intestines and protects them from pathogens and intruders that can damage the epithelial lining.
- Ideal for easing acute diarrhoea
- During a course of antibiotics, give a few days before and finish a few days after the course to help the protection and recovery of the microbiome
- Effective against candida overgrowth
- Can be given in conjunction with other probiotics
- Side effects may include constipation. Not recommended for immunosupressed or seriously ill dogs as there is a risk of fungemia

🦠 Soil Based Probiotics (SBOs) 🦠

- Spore-forming bacteria naturally found in soil and water
- Most common strains are Bacillus subtiliis, Bacillus Indicus and Bacillus coagulans
- Have a hard coating that protects them from heat, stomach acids and antibiotics which helps them colonise the colon rather than the small intestine
- Works well for rebalancing the microbiome in dogs with SIBO
- Also aids in stopping and preventing diarrhoea after antibiotics and can be provided during a course of antibiotics
- Support norepinephrine and dopamine production
- Manages yeast overgrowth
- Can be given in conjunction with other probiotics
- Ideal for dogs with allergies to dairy and yeast

🦠 Lactic Acid Probiotics (containing Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium strains) 🦠

- Lactic acid producing bacteria
- Inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestine
- Typically only last about 24 hours before they’re eliminated from the gut.
- Specific strains may be useful for treating certain ailments: Lactobacillus Acidophilus for controlling clostridia; Lactobacillus Casei for modulating mood; Bifidobacterium Longum for stress reduction, food allergies; Pediococcus Acidilactici for skin conditions, leaky gut; Lactobacillus reuteri for inhibiting salmonella growth
- Dog specific strains found in Adored Beasts Fidos Flora include Lactobacillus casei K9-1, Lactobacillus fermentum K9-2
- Some Lactobacillus strains have been found to delay the microbiome’s recovery after antibiotics rather than support, SBOs or SB may be better to support the microbiome in these cases
- Not for dogs with SIBO as these will promote further overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine
- Rotating through various products to maintain microbial diversity is key

🦠 Faecal transplant 🦠

- Faecal microbia of a healthy donor is capsulated and inserted into a diseased patients gastrointestinal tract
- Restores the microbial diversity
- For dogs experiencing chronic ongoing digestive or skin concerns which probiotic treatment has been unable to alleviate
- Typically performed in a veterinary hospital under sedation, some may also perform the transplant in conjunction with ozone therapy to boost the effectiveness
- As a non invasive alternative, some companies such as AnimalBiome have orally administered capsules of this bacteria available which can be just as effective as the e***a.

🦠 Probiotic Foods 🦠

🥛 Natural Yoghurt - lactic acid strains, caution as there is little probiotics compared to other sources and dairy is linked to inflammation.

🍶 Kefir - strains of lactic acid bacteria that contain many species and strains of bacteria, vitamins, proteins and yeast. Option to select non dairy variety.

🥦 Fermented Vegetables - both probiotic but also have high prebiotic content

🧄 Prebiotics 🪵

Prebiotics and prebiotic foods feed probiotics. The soluble fiber within prebiotics is fermented by gut bacteria when it reaches the colon, assisting its colonisation.

Starchy Prebiotics
🍠 Sweet potato
🎃 Pumpkin
🪻 Chicory root
🌱 Burdock Root

Fruit Prebiotics
🍌 Banana
🍏 Apples
🍑 Papaya

Low Starch Prebiotics
🍄 Mushrooms including turkey tail, lions mane, chaga, maitake and reishi
🧄 Garlic
🫚 Jerusalem artichoke
🥬 Dandelion Greens
🥦 Asparagus
🪵 Slippery elm

Avoid maltodextrin as this is often derived from GM corn, can spike blood sugar and can feed e.coli populations.

Remember, a varied diet will help naturally increase microbial diversity which is what we are aiming to do here. You can’t out supplement a poor diet. Ensuring you are adding as much wholesome, natural, species appropriate foods to your dogs bowl as you can is essential for gut support and strength.

I had a lovely walk with Lenny, Orion and Elsie today.

Lenny has to be the most difficult dog to take pictures of, as he always tries to avoid having his picture taken by looking in the opposite direction. 🤦‍♀️

I’m so sorry I turned you into a clown Lenny, but I ran out of ideas. With the black markings on his lips it makes him look like a grumpy clown 🤣.

Sadly small breeds often get treated completely differently to larger breeds and not in a good way.

Just because they are smaller in size, it does not mean that they don’t need to be understood or given as much time, care, exercise or training as larger breeds. Especially when keeping in mind that many small breeds, like Terriers for example are a working breed.

Small breeds still need daily exercise like any other dog. They should not be stuck in doors all day, every day with only access to a garden for ‘exercise’. This is very bad for them not only physically but mentally.

They need to be properly trained and taught correct socialisation just like bigger breeds do.
It is not funny or okay to let a small dog be aggressive towards people or other dogs, especially not towards bigger dogs.
Nor should you allow strangers to constantly try to pet them, especially if your small dog is giving clear signals that they don’t want to interact with a stranger or be touched by them.

It is also very important to not mollycoddle or anthropomorphise a small dog, especially when they make it clear that they are not okay with being treated that way. This can damage your bond with your dog and lead to serious behavioural issues.

Small breeds need to be listened to, understand and respect, they should not be treated differently purely because they are small.

Small dogs can have a really tough time of it. Because they are small they are not always respected and listened to as much as larger breeds. Is it then any wonder that they become scared and vocal about their fear and wish to be left alone?

Some more Halloween fun on a sunny day!

With it being half term I don’t have all of the dogs I usually walk, but i’ve still had lovely walks with the rest. We do miss our friends and can’t wait to see them all next week.

I noticed some new decorations up in the park, which is great as it gave me new options for photos. Although I don’t think that some of the dogs are too impressed but they were absolute superstar models! ❤️

It’s just nice to be able to do something a bit different for a change.
