We’re delighted to announce the birth of our first ever prehensile-tailed skink at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo! 🎉🦎

Over six years ago, we welcomed two females, Uki and Makira, to the zoo. Last year, we were delighted to find a suitable male to join them and form a social group. Prehensile-tailed skinks are unusual among reptiles for being highly social, often living together in family groups in the wild.

After an incredible nine-month gestation, one of our females has now given birth to a healthy baby, another first for the zoo! 💚

And you might be surprised by just how big a newborn prehensile-tailed skink is compared to its mum! Unlike many reptiles that hatch from eggs, prehensile-tailed skinks give birth to live young, with the newborn arriving already well-developed and ready to explore.

Native to the Solomon Islands, prehensile-tailed skinks are currently classified as Near Threatened, with habitat loss and trapping for the exotic pet trade contributing to concerns about their future in the wild. Conservation breeding programmes in modern zoos help us develop knowledge of their biology, reproduction and husbandry, while providing an important safeguard for threatened species.

They also have a rather unusual habit that helps them make the most of their environment - coprophagy, meaning they eat faeces! 💩🦎 Young skinks consume the droppings of adults, helping them acquire important microorganisms needed to establish their gut bacteria and digest their plant-based diet!

Our newest arrival is doing brilliantly under the watchful eye of our keepers, and we couldn’t be more excited to see our skink family grow.

Come and meet Uki, Makira and their new arrival in our Reptile House on your next visit! 🦎🌿

Big shout out to the team at eBay for their help sprucing up our meerkat enclosure this morning, as part of their company away day!

Adding new fresh sand to the enclosure is a big job for our small keeper team, but many hands make light work, which is why we are always very grateful for the help of our company away day groups ☺️

The keepers (and most importantly, the meerkats) are thrilled with the upgrade! 💛

If your company is looking for a way to blend team development with meaningful contributions to animal care and conservation, why not spend the day with us at the zoo! 🐾

Thanks team eBay for all your help! ❤️💙💛💚

Nothing as satisfying as a good morning scratch 🥱 🐐

Paprika the goat was so keen to test her new scratch post this morning that she queued behind her keeper installing it, to make sure she was ready for the first quality check 🔨 🤓

🎂Happy 9th Birthday Diego! 🥳

Diego the cotton-top tamarin turns 9 today! Our keepers have been pulling out all the stops to treat Diego and his sister Nellie with all of their favourite foods, including wax worms and sweet potato 🐛🍠😋

Cotton-top tamarins are a critically endangered species from north-west Colombia. We are so proud to care for the species here at the zoo, as well as supporting the amazing Proyecto T**i to help support cotton-tops out in the wild 🌴 🌎

Happy Birthday Diego! 💚

Our latest little arrivals have made their first brave steps into the big wide world! 🥹

After spending their first few weeks safely tucked away underground, the latest additions to our meerkat mob are now venturing out to explore their habitat - with the rest of their mischievous family never far away!

🧐 Did you know? Meerkat pups are born with their eyes and ears closed and rely completely on their family for care. As they grow, the whole group helps to look after them, with older siblings and other family members getting involved in babysitting duties. 🥰

And now these little pups are ready to start discovering their surroundings, learning from the grown-ups and, no doubt, getting into plenty of mischief along the way! 👀

☀️ Visiting us this summer holidays? Come and see if you can spot our newest meerkat family members out exploring with their family.
