🌟 Winter Nights at the Zoo is back and is set to be even brighter and festive than last year! 🌟

Following the fun and success of last year, we're inviting you, once again, to discover wildlife under the stars.

For five evenings in December, as darkness falls, the zoo will come alive with Christmas performances, seasonal treats and exclusive mini feeding experiences and talks all about our special animals.

It’s not a trick, just a treat! Battersea Park Children’s Boo is back this year with new spooky fun for the family this October half term ✨

🐌 MINIBEAST MANSION 🐌
• This year, we’re taking the ‘creepy’ out of ‘creepy crawly’ and celebrating our invertebrates in our minibeast mansion. Get up close to our snails, tarantulas, millipedes and other unique zoo residents alongside craft activities.

📖 (NOT SO) SPOOKY STORYTIME 📖
• Are you sitting comfortably? Then let’s begin! Listen to an interactive story told with puppets all about our zoo animals and their adventures.

👻 COSTUME COMPETITION 👻
• We want to see your best outfit - spooky or not! We’re giving away an animal encounter to someone in a fabulous costume. Staff will be on the look out for our best dressed visitors all week.

It’s a PIG day for our team 🧡🐷

This morning our keeper team said goodbye to our latest wonderful litter of Oxford Sandy & Black Piglets, who were born at the zoo on 15th June 2025. They’re travelling a short distance down the road to our project partners, in collaboration with Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society, where they will continue to support their breed, with some going on to breed themselves one day too. 🐖

With as few as 350-500 individuals remaining, they are one of our “at risk” native breeds, and feature in the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist. Today they are being saved from disappearing forever by dedicated keepers up and down the country, supported by the amazing work of the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society 🐷

We know many of our members and visitors have loved watching our cheeky piglets growing up over the last couple of months. Especially seeing mum Ruth doing such a fantastic job of raising such a big litter! We can confidently say that Ruth is very much looking forward to the peace and quiet - and no longer needing to share her food! 🍎

We want to say another huge thank you to the dedicated people behind the Oxford Sandy & Black pig society for their collaboration with this project. We look forward to continuing our work to protect this breed going forward.

Our breeding sow, Ruth, and her companion Winny are huge characters on our farm section, so be sure to stop by and meet them at our daily pig talk at 1:30pm! 🧡

📣🐒INTERNATIONAL PRIMATE DAY🐒📣

Today we are celebrating the amazing diversity of primate species that share our planet with us, whilst also raising awareness of how vital it is that we all take on the responsibility of conserving these creatures in the wild for future generations.

Today, over half of all primate species on Earth face extinction. Habitat destruction, poaching and the exotic pet trade of primate species is pushing these animals to brink of existence, and its down to all of us to protect them.

The campaign highlights the pitfalls of irresponsible social media usage and its impact on wild primate populations as well as captive primate welfare. Primates will never make good pets, and sharing seemingly cute videos of pet primates online can fuel the demand for primates within the exotic pet trade. Protect wild primates by ensuring what you share on social media doesn’t unintentionally promote the primate pets trade.

By living more sustainably, protecting ecosystems and making a stand against the trade of primates as pets we can all contribute to their conservation. Modern zoos are collaborating on vital breeding programmes such as EEP’s as well as in-situ conservation projects to fight against the extinction of primate species.
