Hero of the day. The ball I threw had disappeared into the dense thickets of stinging nettles and other stuff. I spent about a quarter of an hour searching (my ahins are still burning), trying every direction, flattening the plants with a stick, and couldn't find it. But each time I wanted to quit and walk off, persistent Betty woul'd dive back in sounding quite excited, so I checked again and again, but couldn't see anything. After 3 or 4 times, Betty lost patience, went even deeper and came back with the ball! That was truly impressive. She would make a great search and rescue k9 💪

Another goodbye in very quick succession... I met Monty (who because of his impressive fur reminded me of a musk ox) a Finnish Lapphund, about 5 years ago, because he needed help learning to tolerate other male dogs. Lapphund is a type of cattle dog, specifically bred for raindeer herding, which requires a strong, confident and a bit independent dog. Monty was all that, unfortunately he was also quick to impose his will onto some dogs that crossed his path. He ended up being walked solo, which only deepened the problem. After a bit of regular work, Monty turned into a happy, very social dog. He loved to fetch, regardless whether the ball was thrown by me or anyone else in sight (he loved to steal the ball from random dogs). Once in his posession, it was chewed with passion. And Monty's bite force was pretty serious - he was the only dog in the pack, who managed to destroy a couple of "undestructable" balls. But what he loved the most, was the sound of his own voice. It was the most vocal dog I knew. He would just bark randomly, regardless of the situation, for reasons only nown to him. He barked while walking or laying down, when bored or busy, when I said something to him or when I was quiet...
Monty had to be put down due to illness. Rest easy big boy, you'll be missed.

This is in memory of Alvin, a dog who was an important part of my life as a dog walker. He was always around, 5 days per week for the last decade. He was never really obedient but he was with us. Recall only existed when he wanted to respond, but I never worried about Alvin not coming back... Well ok, maybe once. It was in Brockwell Park, on one of our very first walks together, we were coming back to the van when I decided to let him run a bit more. Unfortunately, as soon as the lead was off, he bolted across the field, through the side gate and dissapeared in the nearby estate. It was a very stressful 10 or 15 mins, after which Alvin just appeared from behind the bins, like nothing happened.
Almost every day, Alvin would have his few laps around the field, pure joy, speed and strength. I never tired of watching him run.
I take many staged photos where dogs are standing, sitting, lying down, but there was this thing about Alvin, that he would never sit down on command. Because of this, I sometimes had to remove it from the frame because it was messing up the setup 🙂. During the 10 years together, I saw him sitting only a few times, but luckily I managed to capture it in a few photos.
Alvin passed away yesterday. He lived a good, long life. If there are squirrels in dog heaven, I hope you catch them all, Alv.
