Rodney first joined Outward-Hound as a 12-week-old puppy — and 8 years later, he’s 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 training with us! ❤️

His owner says:

“We joined puppy class when Rodney was 12 weeks old and 8 years later we're still here now working through the life skills classes. I've definitely got the dog training bug and love trying new exercises with Rodney while still trying to master the ones he finds challenging… Our dog family has grown and Willow and Finn have both also joined classes, both with their own challenges, but that’s why these classes really help.”

🎃 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧

Halloween can be great fun for us, but it can be a real fright night for our dogs. Here are some simple ways to help keep your dog calm, comfortable, and safe.

👻 𝟏. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞

With trick-or-treaters coming and going, the door will be opening a lot — and that can be stressful or tempting for dogs.

• 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 to create a safe space away from the front door.
• 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 so your dog can’t bolt outside.
• 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐃 𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐧, just in case they do manage to slip out.
• If your dog is likely to be unsettled by the constant activity, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 with something to do, such as a stuffed Kong or chew.

🔔 𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥
If your dog reacts to the sound of the doorbell:

• 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭, or
• 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 to something less startling, or
• 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 asking visitors to knock gently.
Reducing those unexpected sounds can really help dogs who are sensitive to noise.

🍫 𝟑. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡
Many Halloween treats are dangerous to dogs.
• 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐱𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐥 (𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬) are toxic — keep all human treats safely out of reach.
• 𝐋𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 can also cause choking or blockages if swallowed.
• Make sure children know not to share sweets with your dog.

💀 𝟒. 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
Some decorations can be frightening or hazardous to curious dogs.
• 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 out of reach.
• Avoid motion-activated or noisy decorations near your dog’s resting area.

🧡 𝟓. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞
If your dog finds Halloween overwhelming, help them feel safe.
• 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬, 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜, or use white noise to block outside activity.
• 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 — a lick mat, stuffed Kong, or chew can help distract and relax.
• If your dog struggles with visitors, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤-𝐨𝐫-𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 or popping a polite “No Trick or Treaters, Dog Resting” note on your door.

If you’ve ever wondered who’s behind the lead at Outward-Hound — it’s me, Jo! 👋

I’m a qualified dog trainer and the proud owner of Outward-Hound Pet Services here in Barnsley. My journey with dogs began back in 2010, and since then, I’ve helped hundreds of owners and their dogs through understanding, trust, and positive reinforcement.

Charlie and Percy — my two incredible rescue boys — shaped everything I do. 💛
Charlie came to me with separation anxiety and taught me patience, structure, and empathy. Percy, who many of you came to know and love, reminded me that progress takes time and that every dog deserves the chance to shine. Their lessons live on in every class I teach.

Now, I’m joined by Phoenix — my whirlwind of enthusiasm and mischief — keeping me on my toes and reminding me what it’s like to raise a teenage dog all over again! 🐕‍🔥

I’m a proud member of the APDT, a Kennel Club Accredited Instructor, and one of only a handful of qualified assistance dog assessors in the UK. My passion is helping owners bring out the very best in their dogs — whether through puppy foundations, life skills, or one-to-one support.

And while I have an incredible team supporting me, I’m still very much at the heart of everything that happens at Outward-Hound. I reply to every message and email, write lesson plans, create behaviour and training programmes, still walk dogs (including my very first walking client!), and personally teach every single class. 💛

Because being hands-on and helping dogs and their owners succeed is what I love most.

🌟 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 & 𝐙𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐚! 🌟

We’re delighted to welcome the gorgeous 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 and 𝐙𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐚 to the Outward-Hound family! 🐾

Their owners are heading off on holiday soon, so we’ll be helping out with dog walks while they’re being cared for by a family member. To make sure everyone’s comfortable, their walker 𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐲 is spending a few weeks getting to know them before the trip — building trust, routines, and plenty of tail wags along the way!

This type of 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 is something we’re often asked for — perfect for dogs staying with family or friends while their owners are away. It helps keep everyone’s routine on track and gives peace of mind knowing your dog is still getting their regular walks with a familiar face.
