PERINEAL URETHROSTOMY SURGERY IN CATS:
A perineal urethrostomy (PU) is a surgical procedure performed on male cats to resolve recurrent or life-threatening urinary blockages.
🔴It works by removing the narrowest portion of the p***s and creating a wider, shorter opening, permanently altering the anatomy so urine can easily pass.
❗️Why It's Needed??? ❗️
Male cats have a naturally long and narrowing urethra that makes them highly susceptible to blockages from urinary stones, crystals, mucus, or blood clots.
If a cat experiences multiple blockages or cannot be unblocked using a standard urinary catheter, a PU is the most recommended long-term solution to prevent fatal kidney failure.
❗️The Procedure & Recovery ❗️
Under general anesthesia, the veterinarian amputates the end of the p***s and sutures the urethra directly to the skin of the perineum, creating a wider opening (essentially changing the anatomical exit so they "p*e like a female cat").
❗️The Recovery:❗️
Recovery takes about 2 to 3 weeks. The cat must wear an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) continuously to prevent them from licking or traumatizing the delicate surgical site.
Confinement: Strict rest is required—no jumping or running, as this can tear the stitches or cause swelling.
❗️Potential Complications:❗️
While most cats go on to live normal, comfortable lives, veterinarians track a few specific postoperative risks:
1)Stricture: Scarring at the surgical site can cause the new opening to narrow. This is the most serious complication and may require a secondary surgery.
2)Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Because the urethra is shorter, bacteria can travel into the bladder more easily. Routine urine testing is often recommended.
3)Incontinence: Permanent leakage or the inability to control urination can occasionally occur, though it is rare.
