I always get asked which treats I use. Here are some of the treats that I’m currently loving:

JR Pet Products pastes — Versatile and easy to use for training, lick mats, or topping up a meal.

Paddock Farm treats & pate — great ingredients . The pate works especially well for stuffing into a Kong or enrichment toy and perfect for high value treats.

Anco ostrich bites & training treats — Small and easy to break into pieces, which makes portion control straightforward during training sessions.

Coya freeze dried treats — Single-ingredient and minimally processed, so a good choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Waita freeze dried treats — Another single-ingredient option that’s earned a permanent place in the treat rotation. Light, easy to store, and well received by most dogs.

☀️ Here are your hot weather dog tips! ☀️

1. Get up and out early — walk before 8am when the pavement is cool and the sun is low

2. Avoid walking in the heat of the day - skip it completely if you didn’t get out early enough

3. Check the pavement with your hand — if it’s too hot for you to hold your palm on it for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for their paws

4. Always bring water — dogs can overheat quickly, keep them hydrated on every walk

5. Keep them indoors during the hottest part of the day — a cool shaded space is the safest place to be

6. Let them paddle if you can — rivers, streams or a paddling pool in the garden are great ways to cool down

7. Frozen treats are a great shout — frozen kong, ice cubes or frozen fruit can help keep them cool

8. Never leave your dog in a car — even with windows open, temperatures rise dangerously fast

9. Watch for signs of overheating — excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy means get them somewhere cool immediately

10. Evening walks work too — once the sun goes down and pavement cools

The Magic Hand game is a game changer for loose lead walking! Your dog has to stay focused on your hand waiting for the next treat to drop, which teaches them to stay close and pay attention to you. They don’t even realise they’re learning — but you’re building their focus and rewarding them for staying right by your side. The more they practice, the more they learn that sticking close to you is always worth it!

A chin rest is super helpful! I use it often for handling, like wiping muddy paws, drying my dog off after a bath, or putting on a harness, and it’s become a great calming cue since holding the position naturally gets them to relax and breathe slower. It’s also handy for photos and videos, keeping their head steady and facing the right way, and it’s been a solid foundation for other cooperative care skills like holding still for a muzzle, eye exam, or blood draw. I use it to redirect attention away from triggers too, giving my dog something familiar to focus on instead of whatever’s stressing them out, and overall it’s helped build patience and impulse control that carries over into other training.
