To support those of you responding to latest bluetongue (BTV-3) outbreak, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is now providing additional sample testing alongside The Pirbright Institute to help get on top of the delays many of you are experiencing.

What you need to know:
• Continue sending samples to The Pirbright Institute as usual
• Securely attach the submission form to the outside of the parcel
• Check that every detail is complete and accurate, including full ear tag numbers and the correct County Parish Holding number, to help minimise delays.

🎉 Amazing achievement, Twa Auld Vets!

Retired vets and BVA members Frank Stephen and Andrew Rafferty have completed the 192-mile Coast to Coast Path, walking from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire — all while raising an incredible £17,387 for Alzheimer Scotland!

The pair originally set a £5,000 target and were thrilled by the support they received. Reflecting on the generosity behind their fundraising, Frank said: “It never ceases to amaze me how generous the people in the north of Scotland are.”

APHA has strengthened its response to the bluetongue outbreak by expanding testing capacity at its Weybridge laboratory, working in close collaboration with the National Reference Laboratory, The Pirbright Institute. This will help speed up turnaround times for bluetongue test results during a period of unprecedented demand. Bluetongue testing update for vets

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is now providing additional bluetongue sample testing, increasing the capacity already provided by The Pirbright Institute.

What you need to know:
• Continue sending samples to The Pirbright Institute as usual
• Securely attach the submission form to the outside of the parcel
• Check that every detail is complete and accurate, including full ear tag numbers and the correct CPH number, to help minimise delays.

Some samples may be diverted to APHA Weybridge for testing, but results will be reported in the usual way. APHA reports will state “BTV”, while Pirbright reports will state “BTV-3,” a positive result emailed directly can be treated as BTV-3. Other serotypes will be investigated where necessary.

Established in 1948, Thrums Vets is a mixed animal practice operating across four branches in Angus and Perthshire, with a team of 60 staff.

While confident in the culture already in place, the practice wanted a clearer understanding of staff experience across its sites, to identify where things were working well and where there were opportunities to improve, with a view to supporting wellbeing, retention and client outcomes.
