Today we're celebrating our majestic, four-legged friends – HORSES!

From wild mustangs to gentle ponies, these incredible animals have been by our side throughout history. Whether you ride, or just admire their strength and beauty, let's take a moment to appreciate these magnificent creatures.

Here are a few fun and interesting facts. (Credit Horse & Hound )
Horses have outstanding hearing which stems from their ability to rotate their ears 180 degrees using 10 ear muscles (humans only have 3). This provides them with great directional hearing.
Horses have the largest eyes of any other land mammal.
Horses cannot breathe through their mouth, only through their nose!
A horse’s brain weighs around 623g, half the weight of a human brain

As we cross over into Summer, keeping up with maintaining your equestrian surface must continue to be a priority.

Proper equestrian surface maintenance is crucial for ensuring longevity, quality, and safety. Neglecting maintenance can lead to issues like unstable footing, foreign dust accumulation, and compromised surface integrity, increasing the risk of joint, muscle, and bone injuries for horses and riders.
The maintenance requirements vary depending on factors such as the surface material, discipline, and indoor or outdoor location. Common maintenance tasks include:

• Grading and compacting to maintain firmness and even distribution
• Irrigation for unwaxed surfaces to maintain optimal moisture content
• Removal of droppings and debris to prevent contamination

Should you have a limited budget, we offer Fibrewax which is a high quality, low maintenance equestrian surface.

Day Equestrian offers comprehensive guidance and support for maintaining their equestrian surfaces. Their team of dedicated specialists provides expert knowledge and assistance to help clients keep their surfaces in excellent condition, ensuring a safe and consistent environment for horses and riders.

We offer the best aggregates pipes!

Most drainage systems are constructed using a simple herringbone pattern. This pattern features a long drain down the centre of the arena, with smaller channels feeding into it. Once these channels have been lined with a woven membrane (an optional step) and the drainage pipes have been installed, they are backfilled to their original excavation level with stone.

It's essential to use a clean, preferably washed, aggregate for the backfill as dust and dirt can block the drainage system. We recommend utilising 20-40mm cleanstone to backfill and and for the sub-base. However, we can also supply a 10-20mm shingle if required.

When constructing an equestrian arena, we also offer aggregates for the sub-base. For this we recommend purchasing 20/40 clean hardstone.

When looking at our materials or submitting quotes for certain products in our range, have you ever wondered how deliveries work? Here is a summary of what you need know to about receiving products after placing an order.

For orders of Bagged Rubber or Daytec™ Fibre products, the typical shipping method is via an 18-ton flatbed truck equipped with a liftgate. Offloading of the shipment requires manual labor at the delivery destination.

Delivery of loose material can be arranged in either large artic lorries, standard eight-wheelers, or smaller four-wheelers.

Did you know: Natural materials such as grass and clay were utilised as equestrian surfaces, although they were not durable or weatherproof like materials used today.

Arena surfaces in the equestrian industry have evolved dramatically, from basic sand to complex Fibrewax® mixes, reflecting not only technological developments but also a better knowledge of horse biomechanics.

Myth buster: Many people believe that modern surfaces are challenging to maintain, but the reality is often quite different. Many contemporary surface materials and finishes actually require less intensive care and upkeep than traditional options.

In an indoor arena, the dust particles become trapped within the enclosed space, leading to a higher concentration of these fine particulates in the air that the horses are breathing. This can be even more problematic than outdoor arenas, where the dust has more opportunity to disperse.

According to Farm and Barn inhalation of dust can cause:
• Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO)
• heaves (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
• Inflammatory airway disease
• Poor performance

For horse riders, adverse effects include but aren’t limited to:
• organic dust toxic syndrome
• chronic bronchitis
• chronic obstructive lung disease
• hypersensitivity pneumonitis

To prevent dust from rising, one solution is to invest in an irrigation system like a sprinkler, to help keep the ground consistently moist and dust-free, especially for non-waxed surfaces. Another preventative measure is ensuring there is proper ventilation in indoor arenas to allow for air circulation and dust dispersal.

Every horse deserves to be well looked after…

Today is National Help a Horse day which is all about raising awareness of the struggles that equines all over the world face and contribute to efforts saving them from cruel and inhumane situations.

Maintaining equestrian surfaces is crucial for the well-being of horses and riders. Here are some ways to look after equestrian surfaces without harming horses:
1) Regular Inspection: Conduct routine inspections of the surface to identify any irregularities, such as holes, unevenness, or loose footing materials. Promptly address any issues to prevent accidents or injuries to the horses.
2) Monitor Footing Depth: Keep an eye on the depth of the footing, as excessively deep or shallow surfaces can increase the risk of strain or injury to horses. Follow guidelines specific to the type of riding discipline and adjust footing depth accordingly.
3) Footing Material Selection: Choose footing materials carefully based on factors such as the type of riding discipline, climate, and frequency of use. Materials like our Silica sand and Fibre based products including Fibremix® and Fibrewax® Plus are highly recommended and should be regularly replenished as they break down over time.
4) Proper Drainage: Ensure the equestrian surface has adequate drainage to prevent water accumulation, which can lead to footing becoming too soft or slippery. Proper grading and installation of drainage systems can help in this regard.

As you know the entrance of Spring in the U.K is typically accompanied with rain. It has been quite a wet and windy month in Southern England so far and BBC Weather predicts that May will see a continuation of these conditions.

Therefore, if you are starting the process of building a new arena, ensuring a robust, efficiently draining base through proper construction methods and recommended materials is paramount. Many arena issues arise when either the drainage layer or membrane fails to function as intended.
The drainage stone on your riding arena serves three primary purposes:
• To provide a firm and stable base for your manège surface
• To allow excess water to pass freely from the arena
• To provide a reservoir away from the surface that will hold any excess water until it can be dispersed into the ground or purpose-built drains
• To find out what stones we recommend for drainage, read our article in the link below.

As an owner or manager of an arena, you most likely are aware that utilising surface stabilising fibres is a simple method for revitalizing arena surfaces.

We’ve put together an easy to follow guide showing you how our fully synthetic Daytec® fibre, which can be added to new or existing silica sand-based surfaces. Your horse may move easily across the arena footing thanks to these premium fibers that help connect all the surface components together. Improved stability, cushioning, responsiveness, and vital moisture retention are some of its advantages. Below are the first three steps in the process:
1. Using a depth probe, ensure the existing surface is a minimum depth of 125-150mm across the entire arena, re-distributing the surface where necessary.

2. Dampen the surface if needed
3. Divide the surface area into equal sections, corresponding to the number of bales that need to be added. Please contact us to determine how many bales we recommend for your arena size.

If you own or manage a high-performance equestrian surface, our silica sand is definately worth considering. It is a specialty material with a unique particle makeup. When creating a premium, low-maintenance riding surface, silica sand works best when utilised with additional materials like rubber chippings, material fibres, and equestrian wax.
