We don’t let our clients leave without their next appointment already booked.

It sounds like a small thing. It isn’t.

When clients leave with “call us when you’re ready,” most of them mean to. Then two months pass, the coat’s a mess, and it’s harder on the dog and more expensive to fix than it ever needed to be.

Booking at pick-up removes all of that. One less thing for the client to think about. One more dog on a proper rhythm.

We also go through our client list every month, just to check nobody’s slipped through unnoticed. If we spot someone who’s overdue, we send a quick note to say we’ve saved them a spot.

Some of our clients now book a whole year of appointments in advance, spaced exactly to their dog’s routine, so they never have to think about it again and never risk losing their slot.

It’s the smallest habit that’s made the biggest difference to how we run things here.

We didn’t plan to open an academy.

People kept asking whether they could train with us, and we started small, wanting to see if it would be a good fit for us too, not just for them.

A few college students doing their Level 2 dog grooming course asked if they could come in for work experience. Their courses were teaching them the theory, but they weren’t getting enough real hands-on time with real dogs.

We didn’t have a business plan for it. We had a spare afternoon here, a willing dog there, and a growing pile of people who genuinely wanted to learn the way we’d learned, in a working salon, on real dogs, not in a classroom.

Eventually we stopped saying “maybe one day” and just said yes properly.

We also wanted to offer something we never got ourselves. Support that didn’t disappear the moment the course ended. Proper business guidance, not just grooming technique. The confidence to actually run a sustainable business, not just how to hold the scissors.

Every student in these photos is part of that.

People who walked in curious, sometimes unsure, and left with a skill, a community, and a plan for what comes next.

When Anna taught me to groom, the first thing she made me understand was this:

The groom doesn’t start with the scissors or clippers.

Before anything else I learned quickly how important the wash, the blow dry, the brush, the comb really were. Every step done properly, in order, without rushing. She was firm about it from day one and I didn’t fully understand why until I watched what happened when it was done right.

The coat sat differently. The clippers and scissors moved differently. The finish was cleaner, more precise, more even. The dog was calmer.

Everything that came before the cut had made everything so much easier.

We still teach it exactly this way at Dog World. Because every time we’ve seen it done properly, the result speaks for itself.

Skip the prep and you’ll feel it the moment you start cutting. The coat drags. The finish is uneven. The dog is uncomfortable.

Do it properly and the scissors almost do the work themselves.

Swipe to see why each step matters, and the pro tips that make the difference. 🐾

Last Saturday we ran our second business workshop at Dog World.

Part of what we teach. Part of what makes us different.

Because we believe the business side is just as important as the craft.

We talked about the real stuff. The stuff most grooming courses never touch:

How to price yourself properly, and why undercharging is costing you more than money. How to get reoccurring clients, how to keep them and how to adjust prices accordingly. How to handle difficult clients without losing your standards. How to set up a booking system that protects your time. How to build your Google Business Profile so clients can actually find you. How to know when to refer a dog elsewhere, and why that takes more confidence than saying yes.

Because learning to groom is only half of it. Building a business that lasts, that’s the other half.

And building a community around you, people who understand the work, who you can call when things get hard, who celebrate your wins because they know what they cost, that might just be the most important part of all.

This is what we built Dog World Grooming Academy for.

And we’re not done yet. We’re working on something new: an online business workshop for groomers, wherever you are. More details coming soon. Watch this space. If there is anything you’d like to learn about, send your questions our way. 🤍

Last week a fellow groomer in our local community reached out.

She had this pup on her table, he was severely matted, very jumpy and scared. She was alone and knew she couldn’t safely finish the groom.

She asked if we could help. We said yes.

It took both of us to safely shave his entire coat down very very short. We found grass seeds in his armpits and between his toes.

After we finished we encouraged the owner back to her regular groomer with clear instructions to book consistently so he never has to go through this again.

He was so sweet at the end. Relieved. Finally comfortable.

This is what the grooming community can look like when we choose collaboration over competition. You cannot do this job alone. The groomers around you are not your competition. They’re your village.
