We have two spots left. So if you’ve been thinking about this for a while, now is the time to stop thinking and start asking.

It’s hot. And your dog is feeling it more than you are.

Dogs can’t sweat the way we do. They regulate their temperature through panting and through their paws.

Which means in this heat, a few things really matter. Keep water available at all times, fresh and cool, not ice cold. Avoid walks in the middle of the day. Pavements get hot enough to burn paw pads and if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

Never shave a double-coated breed in summer. That coat isn’t just keeping them warm in winter, it’s insulating them from the heat too. Shaving it off removes their natural protection. A professional groom, removing dead undercoat, keeping the coat clean and manageable, makes a real difference in hot weather.

Dog grooming isn’t just about making dogs look good.

It’s about understanding animal behaviour, managing clients, and building a professional standard you can take anywhere: a salon, a van, a garage, your own business.

Most dog grooming courses teach you how to use the scissors.

What they don’t teach you is how to read a dog that can’t tell you it’s anxious, how to handle a difficult coat, how to communicate with a client who thinks their dog is perfect, or how to price your work without underselling yourself from day one.

This Cavapoo fell asleep mid-groom. Face scissors in hand. Anna didn’t stop.

That doesn’t happen by accident. A dog that relaxed on a grooming table is telling you something: the handler is calm, the movements are slow and deliberate, and the animal feels completely safe. That level of trust is built in the first few minutes. Sometimes the first few seconds.

Most people watch a finished groom and see the result. They don’t see the reading, the moment you notice a dog’s weight shift, the breath that gets a little shorter, the ear that flicks. Knowing when to pause, when to keep going, when to adjust. That’s the skill nobody talks about. And it’s not something you pick up from a YouTube video.
