🤯 Some surveys have shown that up to 22% of dogs in rescue last year were Spaniels and Spaniel rescue charities noted that in recent years their intake of Spaniels is threefold - but why is this happening?

We’re seeing a spike of Spaniels in rescue and with behavioural issues - here’s why we think this might be happening…

1 - They’re marketed wrong!

Spaniels are often sold as ‘the perfect family pet’ when in reality, they require a lot of time, work and effort!

2 - Adolescence is difficult!

Spaniels that seem like perfect puppies still have a tricky adolescent phase, that’s where many owners feel stuck.

3 - Owners aren’t asking for help soon enough!

Many owners don’t ask for behaviour help until it’s too late. It is better to start training before there’s a problem than try to fix it later.

4 - Their genetics are being forgotten!

Behaviours that are labelled ‘naughty’ and ‘stubborn’ are what make Spaniels great at working. This should be channeled, not punished or surpressed.

At Perfect Dog Training, we understand Spaniels! Contact us for help and advice!

Tutorial: Teach your dog to ring toilet training bells to let you know when they need to go out 🐾

We’re using Coachi Puppy & Mini Toilet Training bells (ad)

Step 1 - Teach your dog to touch your hand with their nose, this will give them an understanding of the nose touch we want with the bells later.

Step 2 - Hold the bells in your hand and reward a nose touch to the bells.

Step 3 - Hold the bells so they’re hanging above the dog and reward the nose touch.

Step 4 - Hang the bells on a door and reward every time they touch them.

Step 5 - Open the door every time your dog rings the bells so that they associate bell ringing with the door opening.

This is an easy way that your dog can let you know they need to go out!

The look of love 👀❤️

Something I love about this boy is how he always looks at me with so much engagement, ready to work with me!

These are some pictures taken during our seminar at Networking Day - it was a pleasure! Being able to share our passion with other professionals is always so much fun!

🧠 Behaviour time:

Aside from the obvious relaxed body language, how can you tell that this is play rather than aggression? 🤔

For professionals this may be very easy but for dog owners, it can be worrying when your dog has their teeth bared, is growling or is grabbing at their play mate - so how do I know that this is play?

For me, an obvious sign is the sneezing sound you can hear them both doing 👃🏼

This ‘play sneezing’ is a method of communicating that the “fight” is a play fight rather than aggression, like how children may play wrestle with each other. This sound lets them know that everything’s ok and they’re still friends, keeping things friendly. ❤️

In fact, a study in 2017 found that sneezing is an important part of communication in African Wild Dogs while hunting - so we know that dog communication utilises sneezing across the board!

🐾 NEW STOCK HAS ARRIVED 🐾

Harnesses, collars and leads should be non-restrictive and comfortable! That’s why we’re so proud to stock this kit!

We have collars, leads, harnesses (walking, hiking and running) and bungees!

We have purple, blue, black, teal, orange and green so a real mixture - get in touch if you’re interested.

Why do I sell Non-Stop Dogwear?

I’ve used this equipment for my own dogs (agility, Canicross and everyday wear) for almost 15 years and it’s always my choice for my dogs 💪🏻

A 6 month update that I hope will find anyone early on in their IVDD journey who is as scared and worried as we were.

Ways life is different post IVDD surgery…🐾

💙 Physio is a part of daily life - would you like to see our physio routine?

💙 Walks are shorter and rest periods are longer, but that’s ok - we’re only 6 months in! He tells us when he needs a break and we can carry him/take a break.

💙 He stays closer to us on walks and isn’t as confident, but that’s coming back.

💙 Although we’ve changed him to Maintenance diet (Skinners ) - we’re using energy bars, recovery bars and these dental treats that he loves on walks to keep him fuelled.

💙 His turning and braking isn’t what it used to be, his gait is (likely forever) changed and he can be very unsteady on certain surfaces but no longer needs his shoes or full body support harness!

💙 HE IS STILL SO LOVED AND HAPPY 💙

A huge thank you to those who have supported us on this journey - my DMs are always open for anyone needing a listening ear

Freddie and Ruby smashing their neutrality around other dogs 👏🏻👏🏻

In our Bronze Class we work a lot with distractions, especially the distraction of other dogs. The aim of this lesson was simple: focus whilst on lead in very close proximity to another dog.

Skills like this are the skills that are so important for maintaining safety and control while on walks and in everyday life, so we try to make sure they’re solid when training.
These dogs did so well, despite being very friendly dogs who wanted to say hi to each other 👋🏼 their impulse control was fantastic.

Need help training around distraction? Come to see us 🐾

☀️ This weekend is set to be hot ☀️

Here’s a list of the most important things to remember to keep your dog safe in a heatwave. This is in line with current, recent veterinary guidance and remember to always consult your vet if you’re unsure or concerned.

Here I have included first aid guidance from the Royal Veterinary College to ensure it is the most up to date with vet guidelines.

Keep them safe and cool! 🐾
