SNAKE BITES IN DOGS

Before I start this post can I remind you that the Adder is protected by law. You will be prosecuted if you harm or try to capture this reptile. Adders are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; this means that it is an offence to kill, harm, injure, sell or trade them.

It’s not always easy to find if your dog has been bitten by an Adder unless of course you see it happen. I came across a sad case of a sheep dog who died and to this day the owner is not totally sure if she had been bitten. Snakes are moving more inland and it’s fair to say that you need to stay vigilant where ever you are. School holidays are the most active time for this very shy reptile. Sometimes the dog has a painful reaction, yelps, you may see swelling around the bite site and you might find two small puncture wounds. Dogs often get bitten around their face, ears and legs. Here are some top tips.

1. Stay calm
2. Call your vet and tell them you are bringing in a dog with a snake bite.
3. If you can take a photo of the snake then do NEVER pick the snake up or interfere with it in any way.
4. If you can CARRY the dog then do. Improvise with kit you have if the dog is too big to physically carry.

About us (Sam and Holly)

Here at Sholly’s Pet Pals we strive to build positive relationships with our clients and make your pets feel safe and loved. We are experienced in walking both small and large breeds and have looked after a range of pets whilst owners have been on holiday. In our care, they will be treated like one of our own. Please see our website for testimonials.

We both moved to Anglesey three years ago and have backgrounds in secondary education and marine life. After years of looking after animals, we decided to make this our full time occupation and spend each day doing what we love, animals and the great outdoors!

Both of us are insured with Protectivity, DBS checked & are members of the Professional Dog Walkers Association (PDWA). Proof of documents are available on request and will be discussed in our initial meet. We want to make our qualifications clear to our clients and therefore both hold a Canine First Aid certificate and a Pet Sitting and Dog Walking Diploma.

On our initial meeting, we will discuss your pet’s usual routine, favourite walking routes, and any medical needs and dietary requirements.
