Can I ask does anyone have any experience of laryngeal paralysis.

My handsome boy Buster is really struggling and we are hurtling to the end of the road and I really am finding it difficult to accept.

Turn the clock back a few years and he was given librela for arthritis.

Over the last six months the muscle wastage over this whole body and weakness in his back legs has been horrific

We started visits to a physio and hydrotherapist and for a brief period I thought we had found a solution.

Sadly it became clear quickly though that there was a neurological issue. Buster was "knuckling" his paw sometimes when he walked and then the breathing difficulties started

Lungs and heart checked, all fine.

Buster almost certainly has laryngeal paralysis, we haven't put him through a physical examination to confirm this but the symptoms are text book. Watching him gasp for breath after exercising is terrifying, so his movements are now limited.

We have started red laser therapy to help his body repair itself, but I know it is in vain.

The physio and vet don't think he is up to "tie back" surgery. LP is part of a wider issue called Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis (GOLP) and at the first sign of a neurological issue, it is advised to stop librela.

As I am writing this as I don't know what response I am hoping to get, sadly Buster will lose this fight and we will put him at peace in the next couple of weeks before his breathing becomes too difficult. I would just be happy if I can raise awareness to GOLP and what to look out for (don't accept a diagnosis of arthritis without considering this)

We’ve long called for licensing of rehoming organisations, and with 100,000 people backing a recent petition and MPs showing their support for it in Parliament, the need for action couldn’t be clearer.

The recent sentencing of Oaveed Rahman from Save A Paw, in a truly horrific case where dogs suffered after being entrusted to a rehoming organisation, shows the devastating consequences of operating without proper oversight 💔

It’s time for Government to act. Licensing and regular inspections of rehoming organisations are essential to make the UK a safer place for dogs, and to ensure no animal is ever failed in this way again.
