After confirmation of further positive Bluetongue cases in the Llandrindod Wells area, a Bluetongue meeting has been organised by NFU Cymru on Monday September 14th at 7 pm at RWAS, Builth Wells. Please see the link below to register.

If you are concerned about sheep and cattle with clinical signs of Bluetongue, please contact us ASAP for treatment and testing.

Bluetongue Update:

There has been serious outbreak of Bluetongue Virus BTV-3, in Southwest England -Devon that has spread up into Somerset, with cases now in Southeast and Mid-Wales. The BTV-3 now circulating is causing serious disease in both sheep and cattle, with sheep unfortunately dieing. The cases of farms infected with BTV-3 is rising exponentially day by day.

Please watch for clinical signs in your sheep and cattle, if you have concerns, please contact the surgery ASAP.

Powys is one of the most stock dense counties in the UK. This is your time to vaccinate, to protect your live stock, before BTV-3 cases rise in Mid-Wales.
Sheep need 1 dose of vaccine and it takes 3 weeks for full immunity. Cattle need 2 doses 3 weeks apart, so 6 weeks to full immunity. Bluetongue vaccine is safe in pregnant cattle and sheep, and in rams and bulls.

🌡️🔆 Reminder 🔆🌡️

A missed walk for your dogs won’t be fatal but heat stroke might be…

🔆Please avoid walking your dogs between 9am and 8pm. Avoid that midday heat and get them out for a quick walk early morning or late evening.

🔆Avoid the hot pavements and stick to grassy areas.

🔆Ensure your pets are kept shaded and have access to water at all times.

🔆Reminder to check in on your small furries - rabbits and guinea pigs are prone to fly strike during hotter weather. Please keep hutches clean and check around your pets back end and ensure they are clean from matted fur and any faecal material and throw away any old fruit or veg that may be attracting flies.

🔆 Our brachycephalic breeds are at a higher risk of heat stroke due to their anatomy. So please ensure your pugs, frenchies , bulldogs and similar cat breeds are kept cool and safe.

Enjoy the sunshine, but please leave your dogs at home 🌡️🐾
