The Lluest Horse & Pony Trust

The Lluest Horse & Pony Trust The Lluest Horse and Pony Trust is a small independent charity based in Wales and founded in 1985 to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home equines in need

Since we first opened our stable doors in 1985, Lluest Horse & Pony Trust has rescued, rehabilitated, and successfully rehomed hundreds of horses and ponies from Wales and surrounding areas. Lluest is the only professional and experienced equine welfare charity within South-West Wales. Without its help weak and neglected ponies must make long and arduous journeys to charities in England. Our exper

ienced team aim to give each horse and pony a life worth living, turning sad and neglected ponies into happy ones, supported by experienced vets, farrier’s, nutritionists, and behaviourists. We provide valuable work experience and contact with horses for young people completing their DofE and veterinary students, to people on the autism spectrum and those with additional learning difficulties. Our aim is to always restore our animals to full health, and through our Guardianship scheme, find them a loving purposeful loan home where they can live out the rest of their life in safety. Should the circumstances of Guardian’s change the pony can always come back to the safety of our farm. Lluest meaning haven in Welsh, was founded by the remarkable late Ginny Hajdukiewicz who sadly passed away at the young age of 38 leaving the trust as her legacy. Nestling against the Black Mountain in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside, the Trust is entirely dependant upon voluntary donations and fund raising activities. Anybody who gives to this charity can be assured that every penny possible goes towards the care of our horses and ponies.

Binky and Brazen-two of our adorable sheep

As well as looking cute and making us all laugh at their antics, our four sheep do an important job regarding pasture management.

As sheep have different grazing habits to horses, grazing sheep on the same land as horses improves pasture health. This is because sheep graze closer to the soil than horses, stimulating new, healthy grass growth.

They also provide natural parasite control as sheep have different internal parasite lifecycles to horses. This means if a sheep ingests horse worm larvae, the larvae will die. This works great alongside worming and worm egg counts.

Thank you and well done to everyone who guessed the weights of the two new rescued ponies! You were very accurate with your guesses!

Gwenllian (the chestnut mare) is approximately 11hh, her tape measurement is 460kg and needs to be 250kg max, this means she is around 60kg heavier than our 14hh cob Linus and she needs to lose half her body weight!

Dancing Queen (the grey mare) is 320kg and needs to be 250kg max -that is the equivalent of her constantly carrying the weight of a washing machine!

⚖️Weight tape Wednesday⚖️

Our latest rescue highlights the importance of weight management, as well as showing, not every rescue is underweight!

We were contacted by The Welsh Wildlife Trust for assistance, when a grazier was no longer able to care for their ponies. We advised the Trust to begin routine care before we were able to visit. The ponies were in unsuitable grazing with no viable options for restriction other than short term use of grazing muzzles. Their big field was full of waist high grass. No grazing restrictions led them to become extremely obese.

Technically the mares were a 5/5 body condition score (on the 0-5 scale, which is a 9 on the 1-9 scale, however if the scoring system went higher, they would have been scored higher! They were so obese, one staff member initially thought the grey mare had mastitis before realising it was fat!

Being in this situation puts them at serious risk of laminitis, which in some cases can lead to permanent lameness and euthanasia, as well as EMS, breathing difficulties, and joint problems, such as osteoarthritis.

Thankfully the mares have been directly rehomed on our guardianship scheme and are now on the correct management for weight loss. Although it will take time they are now on the way to being the correct weight and living a happy life.

What weight do you think the ponies are and what is their ideal weight? Both are Welsh section A ponies

💚 Huge Thanks to Everyone Who Helped Make Sunday Such a Great Day! 💚

It wasn’t quite our usual Open Day, but it was still a fun and successful event. We hope to be back to normal for our Autumn Open Day on 6th September.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. Together you helped raise an amazing £1,750 (approximately, with a little more still trickling in!) to help the rescued ponies, donkeys and mules in our care. 🎉🐴

A huge thank you to Myddfai Community Hall & Visitor Centre for accommodating us at such short notice, and to Joanna Lowes Horse Training for giving up her time to showcase her amazing mules. They were a huge hit! 🤩

Thank you to everyone who baked delicious cakes and treats, to all our wonderful volunteers, and to those who generously donated raffle prizes, including Penderyn Distillery, Telegraph Garden and Indoor Plants, Centre, NAF, HollyStar Candle Company, Ted n Bears Tasty Treats , and many other kind supporters. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity.

Our dog show is always one of the highlights of the day, and we couldn’t have done it without Linda and Sally – you are absolute stars! ⭐

Of course, every dog show needs prizes and rosettes, so special thanks also go to Nutriment Natural Treats, Gilbertson & Page, Claytons Animal Feeds, Phil and Sam for the fantastic prizes, and to Sarah Wood for the fabulous rosettes as always.

A huge thank you as well to Claire for collecting and selling vintage clothes, Jane for collecting and selling bric-a-brac, Helen T for growing fabulous vegetable plants, and Sian and Meryl for running their craft and tombola stalls. Each of you kindly donated your profits to help the rescues and we are so grateful for your support.

Thank you to all of our stallholders for bringing along such wonderful crafts and products, helping to make the day so enjoyable for everyone who attended.

Some people travelled for hours to bring stalls, take part in the dog show, volunteer, and support us. You are all very special people. It is difficult to put into words the feeling it gives us to see so many people come together to support the rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at Lluest. Your kindness, generosity and belief in what we do means more than you know.

There is no rest for the wicked! Since packing away on Sunday, we’ve been busy unloading and tidying everything that had to be transported to the hall, caring for the resident rescues back at the farm, and coordinating help for ponies in desperate need of assistance. Equine welfare never stops, but thanks to your support we’re able to continue being there when equines need us most.

I think it’s safe to say we all fell into bed exhausted, but with full hearts. 💚

Every single one of you is a Lluest Hero. 🐴

Bryn and Peter Pan moved fields and they were delighted with this! These growing boys are eating so much they needed a different field full of grass! It's amazing to see them getting taller and bigger, as well as seeing Bryn able to move so well these days.

None of this would have been possible without our supporters, so thank you❤️

🎉🐴 Something exciting happened today! 🐴🎉

We finally had our fabulous new 16ft x 12ft field shelter delivered and installed by Shetlands to shires shelters and stables 🤩

Over the past 18 months we’ve lost two field shelters, so it’s wonderful to finally have them both replaced.

Our part of Wales can be incredibly wet and windy for much of the year. While all of our fields offer natural shelter from hedges, trees and the landscape itself, having purpose-built field shelters gives our rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules the freedom to choose full protection from the rain, wind or sun whenever they need it.

Providing choice is an important part of good welfare, particularly for older equines, those with health conditions, and those who simply prefer the comfort of a dry shelter during our less-than-tropical Welsh weather! ☔🌦️

A huge thank you to Fairfax Saddles, supporters Susan and Russell, and everyone who contributed towards our shelter appeal. Your generosity has helped us provide a safe, comfortable environment for the equines in our care.

You truly are Lluest Heroes. 💚🐴

Taran Bach has recently been learning that humans provide good things, food and scratches!

It has been approximately 5 weeks since he came into our care. It took a team of seven staff and volunteers to pen and catch him in a large back garden. His new owners bought him with the best intentions but with little knowledge and experience. Once he was delivered and released into the garden, nobody could touch him again.

Although, initially unsure of human touch, he is learning that it is okay and that scratches are fun❤️

He is also learning that scratching brushes in his stable can also be great!😀🤩
