🐾 Why Marker Words Matter 🐾
When incorporating impulse control into your dog’s training plan, it’s important that they fully understand what your marker words mean.
For my dogs, I use several different markers:
✔️ Click – The behaviour is correct; food is coming to you.
✔️ Yes – The behaviour is correct; a reward is coming.
✔️ Take it – You may now access the food on the ground.
✔️ Strike – You may access the toy and engage in play.
✔️ Uh oh – That wasn’t quite right; let’s try again.
Each marker has a specific meaning and helps create clarity for the dog. For example, if I’m holding a toy while chatting with someone and accidentally say “yes,” my dog may assume they’re being released to grab the toy. Without clear, consistent markers, misunderstandings can happen.
By giving different rewards their own marker words, your dog learns exactly what is expected and what they have permission to do. This clarity can improve impulse control, reduce rude play, prevent unwanted chasing, and make training more effective overall.
Clear communication builds confident dogs. 🐕✨
