Wet then vet = how you deal with a dog suffering from heats
🌊🏥👇🏻
Quickly wet the dog with cold water or as close as you can get (not freezing cold). If not available, any water that is cooler than the dog’s skin feels.

Cool water is ideal, but any water will help. If you only have soft drinks, ensure they don't contain xylitol, and avoid pouring them on the dog's head. Wetting the dog will promote cooling through evaporation. Do this before taking them to the vet but don't spend too much time on it.

Afterward, contact the vet and inform them about the situation and how long it will take you to arrive. This allows the vet's team to prepare for your dog's arrival and increases their chances of receiving prompt treatment.

Avoid using wet towels on the dog as they can trap heat. However, specialised cooling vests that function through evaporation are suitable.

🎺Calling all light-coloured pets!
While fur provides some protection, areas with thin or light-coloured hair, such as the nose, ears, and belly, are especially vulnerable to UV rays. Protect your pet by limiting their time in direct sunlight, providing shaded areas, and applying pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas that cannot be licked off. Keep sunscreen away from the eyes and mouth.
Remember, prevention is key to keeping your pet safe and comfortable in the sun!🌞🐾

🌡️ temperatures are set to soar this weekend! We wanted to share some important information to help you enjoy the weather and keep your pets safe 🐾
⚠️ avoid travel with pets when you can avoid it! Never leave any pet in a car - in 22• heat, a car can quickly reach 47• 🥵
⚠️ 5 second test - place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pets! 🐾
⚠️ symptoms of heatstroke include but are not limited to excessive, distressed panting, bright red or pale gums, drooling, collapse and vomiting
⚠️ WET THEN VET - Quickly wet the dog with cool water around 15 degrees (not freezing cold). If not available, any water that is cooler than the dog’s skin feels. Do not spend a lot of time on this and call the vet ahead of you arriving to inform them of the situation
⚠️ keep walks to the cooler ends of the day - morning and evening and avoid any activity during the hottest hours of the day
⚠️ provide shade and fresh water at all times
Let’s all enjoy the summer safely! ☀️ 💦

Our vet Katy and her girlfriend Emma are taking on the Edinburgh Half Marathon this Sunday, 24th May, in aid of VetLife! 🩺🏃‍♀️

Having both recently graduated and started their careers in the veterinary profession, this charity is one that means a lot to them. VetLife provides vital support for the wellbeing and mental health of people working within the veterinary industry.

They’ve both been working incredibly hard with training ahead of the big day, and we’re so proud to support them as they take on this challenge for such an important cause.

If you’d like to support Katy and Emma, donations of any size would be hugely appreciated, or even just sharing this post would mean a lot ❤️

We’ve all heard these before…🐾

Our veterinary nurses are pros at keeping pets calm, comforted and cared for - with plenty of kind words (and cuddles!) along the way.

Which words of reassurance do you think your pet would hear the most?
