Medivet New Ferry

Medivet New Ferry Vets in New Ferry caring for pets in the Wirral since 1979 The Practice is mainly concerned with the health and care of companion animals.

Parkside Veterinary Surgery was first established in 1979 as a single centre practice based in New Ferry on the Wirral. Operating to the highest medical and surgical standards on both a first opinion and referral basis has led to the steady growth of a large and loyal client base, provided for by the two surgeries existing today. Clients may book appointments for their pets throughout the day at all three surgeries. Surgical and investigative facilities are to be found at the New Ferry surgery.

Sadly, this week marks Dugie's last week at Medivet New Ferry (Parkside Veterinary Surgery).

As many of you know, Dugie started working at the practice in 1990 before taking over as Partner in 2012. Since 2021, Dugie has been shuttling back and forth to France while still working one week a month at the practice. We would like to thank Dugie for his dedication to the practice and for the countless hours spent chatting to clients; reassuring them, talking them through complex surgery options and providing comfort when they needed it most.

We are sure Dugie will be missed by many of you, as well as us. As a team here at Medivet New Ferry & Bromborough, we share that same passion for veterinary medicine that Dugie has had all these years and we will remain here ready to welcome you and your pets. That same ethos will continue to underpin everything we do, for many years to come. 🐾

🐾 Hi everyone, Luna here and do I have a story to tell you! 🐾

I was out enjoying my walk on the beach today when I found a very interesting crab and decided to eat it before my humans could stop me! 🦀 But they were worried the crab may have contained a fish hook, so after a quick call to the practice, we were advised to come straight in.
Once I arrived, the team looked after me really well. I was given a little sedation and taken through for X-rays.

The good news? No fish hook was found 🐶 this meant I could head home for monitoring, plenty of well earned rest and cuddles 🥰

✨Pets can easily pick up and swallow foreign objects while out on walks so please be vigilant. If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't, contact us as soon as possible for advice.

Meet Nibbles 🐰 Nibbles would like to share some important information about flystrike!

Flystrike can become life-threatening in rabbits and small furries very quickly, especially during warmer weather ☀️

⚠️Things to look out for:
🔸Dirty bottom or urine staining
🔸Strong/foul smell (especially around rear end)
🔸Lethargy or hiding away
🔸Loss of appetite
🔸Visible maggots or fly eggs

Please remember-ANY animal can be affected by flystrike, especially if they have a dirty bottom or an open wound.

✅ How to help prevent it:
🔸Check your pet’s bottom and skin at least once daily (twice daily during the summer months)
🔸Keep housing clean and dry
🔸Grooming regularly, especially long haired pets

Early detection is key, stay vigilant and contact us immediately if you notice any of the above signs-flystrike is an emergency.

Heatstroke can become life-threatening very quickly.

Signs of heatstroke include:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Weakness or collapse
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Confusion or wobbliness
• Seizures

Best times to walk your dog:
Early morning

❌ Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day (typically 11am 4pm)

If you suspect heatstroke:
Move your pet somewhere cool, offer small amounts of water, pour cool (not ice-cold) water over them, and contact your vet immediately.

Please help us keep pets safe and comfortable in the warmer weather 🩷

Here’s the gorgeous Hattie showing off her best tricks for some extra treats after her post-op check with nurse Gemma 🩷

Her brother Steve came along too, although he was feeling a little camera shy! He was very well behaved during his check up and made us all very proud ✨

👣 It's National Walking Month 👣

There's no better time to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy some fresh air with your four-legged friends. Whether it's a gentle stroll around the block, a woodland adventure, or a game of fetch in the park, regular walks are fantastic for both pets and their people.

A good walk supports healthy weight, joint health, mental stimulation, and strengthens the bond you share with your pet ✨

We'd love to see your walking adventures this month — share your photos in the comments below! 📷

Veterinary nurse appointments are an important part of keeping your pet healthy and comfortable. Our nurses can help with weight management, nutrition advice, nail clips, post operative checks, mobility support and much more 🩺

We recently saw the lovely Loffen for a weight check with our vet nurse Debbie 🐾
Regular weight checks can help us monitor overall health and catch any changes early, helping pets stay fit and happy.

Well done, Loffen, for being such a good patient 💙
