HEAT STROKE IN DOGS – KNOW THE SIGNS, SAVE A LIFE ☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that dogs can overheat very quickly. Heat stroke is a serious medical emergency and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
🐾 How to Prevent Heat Stroke:
✔️ Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening
✔️ Always provide access to fresh, cool water
✔️ Ensure plenty of shade and good ventilation
✔️ Avoid strenuous exercise during hot weather
✔️ Never leave a dog in a parked car – even for a few minutes
✔️ Be extra cautious with flat-faced breeds, elderly dogs, puppies, and overweight pets
🚨 Signs of Heat Stroke:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Disorientation or collapse
• Seizures in severe cases
🆘 What To Do If You Suspect Heat Stroke:
1️⃣ Move the dog to a cool, shaded area immediately
2️⃣ Offer small amounts of cool water to drink
3️⃣ Wet the dog with cool (not ice-cold) water, focusing on the belly, paws, and neck
4️⃣ Use a fan if available to aid cooling
5️⃣ Contact your veterinary practice immediately and seek urgent veterinary attention
❌ Do NOT use ice baths or very cold water, as this can make the situation worse.
Heat stroke can develop rapidly, but with awareness and quick action it is often preventable.
