Ollie is one of our lovely older patients. Whilst degenerative conditions often can’t be halted there are many benefits to the patient with ongoing supportive physiotherapy, which maintains comfort and increases quality of life.

PEMF uses electromagnetic pulses to stimulate and balance the cell's functions gently with a pulsating magnetic field that penetrates deeply into the tissues and cells. PEMFs are producted through a magnetic field generator and copper coils, which are in the pad under Ollie’s front legs.

There is gradually emerging research to support its benefits and one such study in dogs investigated the effect of Pulse Mag therapy on OA (Pinna et al., 2012), the aim was to see if it impacted on pain relief and functional capacity of the patient. The dogs had 20 treatments over a period of 3 weeks, and were assessed throughout. Results showed that Pulse Mag improved lameness scores in 92% of the dogs, meaning they were able to put more weight on the affected limb. The dogs also showed reduced pain when the arthritic joints were touched, and owners felt that quality of life had improved. The trial showed a positive correlation in the use of PEMF in dogs with OA. We think Ollie agrees!
