Weโ€™ve got our eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ on our new service launching in July: ophthalmology! ๐ŸŽ‰

Georgie Fricker joins us on 1st July as an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology. Georgie passed her European diploma in 2016 and brings a wealth of expertise and experience to Granta.

Thinking about getting a pug, French bulldog or bulldog? Here is what the research says.

Breathing problems in these breeds are not inevitable - but they are heritable. That means the health of the parents matters enormously. Before you buy, ask to see health test results for both the dam and the sire.

If you already have one of these breeds and notice noisy breathing, snoring that seems to be getting worse, or difficulty exercising, speak to your vet. These are signs worth taking seriously, and early assessment makes a difference.

Jane Ladlow - who devised the Kennel Clubโ€™s grading scheme for flat-faced dogs - leads a specialist airway clinic at Granta. If your vet thinks a referral is the right call, we are here to help ๐Ÿพ

World Environment Day ๐ŸŒ

Every decision at Granta goes through five questions. Does it benefit our patients, our people, our wider community, the profession and the planet?

Our people care deeply about the environment, and factor this into all of our decision making.

When we chose our MRI machine, we decided on one of the very few โ€œzeroโ€ helium systems available. We were thrilled to be the first independently owned veterinary practice in the UK to install one. Conventional MRI systems consume and vent liquid helium during operation, a finite, non-renewable resource, but ours doesn't.

We're also excited to be installing Sagetech anaesthetic equipment, which captures the gases used during surgery and recycles them rather than releasing them into the atmosphere.

Beyond that, weโ€™re rainwater harvesting, enjoying a garden planted for bees and butterflies and a walking group for the team, and choosing local suppliers and community partnerships we're genuinely proud of.

We joined the iiE accreditation scheme this year to be more deliberate about all of it. To hold ourselves to a standard, not just a good intention. We are so proud of our actions and progress so far and are excited for what the future holds!

We have some exciting news ๐ŸŽ‰

From 22 June, Ed Bellamy will be joining our existing oncology team as a European and RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Oncology, and we couldn't be more thrilled to welcome him to the Granta family ๐Ÿพ

Ed is an active researcher with peer-reviewed publications and national presentations to his name, and he sits on the ECVIM-CA (Oncology) Credentials Committee. He's also currently contributing a chapter to a forthcoming veterinary oncology textbook! His clinical interests include sentinel lymph node mapping and electrochemotherapy, both of which he's looking forward to developing here with us.

We are so excited for what Ed's arrival means for our patients and the families who bring them to us. Welcome, Ed. We're so glad to have you as part of Granta ๐Ÿ’™

UPDATE: Owner now found, thank you to everyone for sharing.

A kind member of the public found a female cat on the road last night and brought her to us - sadly, she had already passed away. She wasn't microchipped, and we want to make sure her family know. If you're local and worried she might be yours, please do give us a call: 01223 608 213

5,000 patients. ๐Ÿพ

We opened just over two years ago, and recently we passed a milestone we're SO proud of.

5,000 animals brought to us by families in some of the hardest moments, via countless vets who trusted us with their most complex cases.

Some of those cases stay with us. The dog who arrived with a branch lodged in her oesophagus. The cat whose biliary system needed rebuilding. The dogs who had grass seeds removed from places grass seeds really shouldn't reach - feet, noses, inside chests, under the spine. The dogs who couldn't breathe well and now can. The cat with a massive brain tumour who made it through surgery. The dog with a pancreatic tumour who is still thriving.

Not every patient we've seen has had the outcome we hoped for - and that stays with us too ๐Ÿ’™

If your pet has been part of that 5,000 - thank you for trusting us with them.
Here's to the next 5,000 ๐Ÿพ

Our Internal Medicine Specialist Vicky Lantzaki has just returned from Chalcidiki ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท where she spoke at the 15th Forum of Small Animal Veterinary Medicine.

Vicky delivered three sessions: on chronic gut disease in dogs โ€” including a newer treatment called FMT, or faecal microbiota transplant (which is exactly what it sounds like) โ€” the investigation of excessive drinking and urinating in dogs and cats, and Cushing's disease.

These are conditions our medicine team treats regularly. Going to conferences like this is how our clinicians stay close to the latest thinking and bring it back to the patients they see every day.

What a wonderful VNAM it has been!

To finish it off and celebrate, this year we made something a little different - a top trumps card for every single member of our nursing team. Favourite species, nursing superpower, years qualified - the things that make each of them who they are, not just what they do.

We think the biscuits speak for themselves, too ๐Ÿ˜‹

Helen, Kerry, Vicky, Emma and Sacha and the whole nursing team - thank you. The care you bring to every patient and every family that walks through the door is something our whole practice is built around. We are incredibly lucky to have you.

Happy Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month. ๐Ÿฉบ
