Radiography is a commonly used, essential diagnostic tool in veterinary practice.
Radiography is the most common imaging procedure used in veterinary practices. The x-ray images (radiographs) are produced with the same processes used in human medicine except that the equipment is sized for use with dogs, cats, and other small animals.
X-rays are most useful for viewing bones, solid tissues and areas of the body that have contrasting tissue densities.
Although the procedure is painless, in most cases pets are sedated to reduce the anxiety and stress associated with the procedure, to position the animal, and to help the animal stay still while the images are taken.
Dental radiographs are vital for dental treatment. They are an essential part of determining which teeth are healthy and whether certain teeth need to be extracted. Abnormalities beneath the gums that would otherwise go unnoticed, such as tumors, abscesses, and damage to the tooth roots can be seen on a dental radiograph. For this reason Westport Vets use x-rays for every dental procedure.
Images produced using digital X-ray systems can be easily enhanced or manipulated and, unlike a traditional X-ray machine, no environmental contaminants are used to develop the X-ray film.
Health and Safety is vital when performing radiography. There are many components to ensuring the machine, the room, and individuals performing radiography are managed, monitored and maintained, by law.
