Sometimes the best training session starts by not training at all.
I have just started working with this handsome 8-month-old Rottweiler.
I usually carry out the initial training at the home of my clients , but Tinys excitement levels were through the roof for our first meeting.
When a dogs arousal levels are so high trying to jump straight into training sets the dog up to fail, so for his next session we headed to a secure field and gave him what he needed first, time to sniff, explore, and decompress.
Around 20 minutes of freedom to engage with the environment helped him relax, process the world around him, and bring those arousal levels down.
Once he was in a better emotional state, we had a short session focussing on lead walking. The difference was that Tiny was focussed and listening to his owner.
This is a great reminder the when dogs are over-aroused, learning becomes difficult. By meeting their needs first, we can create the right conditions for training success.
Keep an eye out for Tinys progress over the coming months!
