FIREWORKS NIGHT
As we head into the season for fireworks, now is a good time to make preparations to help your pets deal with any associated anxiety issues. Here are some ideas to consider:
Find out if and when any local groups or neighbours are planning to use fireworks.
If you can't be with your pets on those nights, arrange for a trusted friend or family member to be with them.
Walk your dogs before it gets dark. Keep your pets indoors. Make a safe place for them to settle down.
Make sure windows and doors are closed and soundproofed. Close the curtains. Keep the lights on, and have the TV or radio switched on. Prepare ways to distract your pets, such as providing toys, games, treats and puzzle feeders.
Try to stay relaxed and calm; that will help them to be less anxious. Reassure your pets if they seek comfort.
If you know your pet becomes fearful and stressed at this time of year, contacting our veterinary team early on is important.
We can guide you on techniques to de-stress your pet which are better introduced early on, not just a day or two beforehand. If your pet has needed medication in past years to help them manage anxiety, it's worth noting that some of the medications we use need a 'build up' or 'loading' period prior to the stressful event. This could take several days of preparation.
Please contact our surgery if you would like to book an appointment to discuss your pet's needs. Our team will be happy to help.
