Preliminary work on pond done for start of new year. Improved ease of exit from pond for sluggish brumating turtles. Put in hard tubing on filter and pump to aid flow and tidyness. Need some plants to start growing and tidy up edging but long term residents seem to approve :)

Well I tried to post a 'story' of old baby snaps previous owners gave me of 'rudo' my favorite reeves girl, but the order messed up due to my ineptitude so here it is a slideshow:

Woke up to snow and saw a post by someone on painted turtles on Facebook. Reminded me of this virtual miracle that happens during this time of year every year in the US:

Happy little accidents! Meet my hybrid Common Musk/Razorback Musk hatchlings.
Turns out a 2-year-old just revealed himself to be male Razorback Musk can already father offspring with his Common Musk female company.
I believe these will be sterile but couldn't find a huge amount of detail on specifics. Turtles have very very whacky genetics with hugely variable chromosome numbers from species to species and microchromosomes, mitochondrial inheritance, and things well over my head!
All I know is they are beautiful and very active now well established. Bit hit and miss at the start as they all emerged from eggs with huge egg sacs remaining, perhaps a consequence of the hybridization. The larger two are around 7 weeks, smaller two are around 4 weeks old.

How big my hatchlings are getting!
The Musk pair were born in February and getting some decent personality to them now larger and not as timid. Not had any more Musk eggs until recently as my male Common Musk was ill and under-weight earlier in the year so needed time on his own to recuperate and eat lots. Better now, so should see more eggs in the next month or two for more babies in Spring.

Incidentally, I have 4 surprise Common Musk/Razorback Musk hybrid hatchlings growing out in n a separate tank now. They are a surprise in that the father razorbacks are only a couple of years old!

The Reeves hatchlings continue to amaze me with their beautiful markings and outgoing personalities. You can definitely see their Mum's(Rudo) bright orange coloration becoming more apparent in them as they mature.

The other surprise who is in this video is the False Map hatchling, who managed to survive despite the egg splitting open prematurely at 44 days. He is skittish, as per the species, but swims like a champion.
Enjoy the footage and feel free to hit me up if think you can look after some of these beauties in the manner they deserve for as long as you can.
