In October, two of our team are heading to Sri Lanka for a couple of weeks to volunteer with WECare Worldwide, a brilliant charity providing veterinary care to the country’s street dogs. Vet Magda MRCVS and Nurse Aimee RVN will be joining a group of volunteers to help with neutering, vaccinations, wound care, and whatever else is needed — all for animals who wouldn’t otherwise get any treatment. 🩺🩹

It’s something they have wanted to do for a long time — and they're so excited (and a little nervous!) that it’s finally happening.
We are sure they will do an absolutely amazing job while they're out there but please join us in supporting them with some kind words in the comments, or if you're able to donate, you can follow the JustGiving link below. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated and be a huge help to the work WECare and their volunteers do.

They have covered all of their own travel and accommodation costs, so every single penny raised will go directly to the charity and the animals who need it most. If you’re able to support them, even a small donation would make a big difference 🐶💛

• £20 covers a spay or castration ✂️
• £5 covers a vaccine 💉

WECare operate a CNVR scheme; Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release. So not only are they helping to control the stray population, they are also working to prevent diseases such as rabies.

Here’s their JustGiving link:

Thank you so much! 🐕🇱🇰💛

🐶 KENNEL COUGH & VACCINATIONS – What You Need to Know! 🐾

Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), is a highly contagious respiratory illness in dogs. It can spread quickly in environments like boarding facilities, dog parks, groomers, or doggy daycare. The good news? There's a vaccine available to help protect your pup!

💉 The Kennel Cough Vaccine – Non-Core, But Important!

According to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) guidelines, the kennel cough vaccine is NOT a core vaccine. This means it isn’t required for all dogs—but it is recommended for those who are at higher risk of exposure.

📌 Your dog may benefit from the Bordetella vaccine if they:

- Attend boarding, grooming, or daycare facilities
- Participate in training classes or dog shows
- Visit dog parks regularly
- Are around other dogs often

🦠 Symptoms of Kennel Cough Include:

- Persistent, dry hacking cough
- Gagging or retching
- Nasal discharge
- Mild fever or lethargy

While kennel cough is usually mild, it can lead to more serious infections—especially in puppies, seniors, or dogs with underlying health issues.

📅 If you're unsure whether your dog needs the kennel cough vaccine, we’re here to help!

👉 Keeping your pet protected starts with knowing what they need—not every dog requires every vaccine.

🔑 Key facts:

🐾 Kennel cough is not normally dangerous and may not need a trip to the vets. It generally clears within a few weeks.
🐾 The incubation period is 2-14 days (from catching to symptoms).
🐾 The kennel cough vaccine lasts 12 months. It covers for the Parainfluenza virus and Bordetella Bronchisepta bacteria.
🐾 Be sure to speak to your vet if there are any immunocompromised individuals in the household.
🐾We generally use the intranasal kennel cough vaccine – this can take up to 3 weeks for immunity to develop so ALWAYS check with your kennels when they would advise your dog has their vaccine.
🐾 Vaccination is not useful in dogs already incubating kennel cough.
🐾 There are many strains of kennel cough infection. At the very least the vaccine should lessen symptoms but it cannot guarantee protection.

We're now entering the summer months and we're already seeing temperatures climb this week.
Our pets cannot regulate themselves in the same way that we can, so it's incredibly important to make accommodations to prevent overheating. 🥵

Over the next few days we will be posting some tips and tricks on keeping your pets cool, how to spot the signs of heat stroke and what to do in an emergency.

Starting off with our canine companions; When it hits 24, Walk no more! 🌡
The leading cause of heat stroke in dogs is exercise, so the easiest way to prevent this is to keep them calm, cool and settled at home 🏡 It is much safer for a dog to miss a walk, than to risk heatstroke!

Meet Dotty, the beautiful Schnauzer puppy 😍🐺🍓🫁

Dotty came to us an emergency because her owner noticed that she was retching and struggling to breathe.

She had an examination and some X-rays which revealed that her stomach was not where it should be!

Dotty was diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia; a hole in her diaphragm (which normally separates the abdomen from the chest). This allowed her stomach and intestines to move through into her chest. Her stomach then bloated, filled with air and squashed her lungs, making it hard for her to breathe.

The team were quick to operate and fixed Dotty's hernia allowing her to breathe normally again and putting her stomach back where it should be!

Dotty's hernia had likely been there since birth, however it didn't cause a problem until her stomach bloated. Many dogs with congenital hernias show no symptoms and so aren't diagnosed until they suddenly develop signs such as vomiting or problems with their breathing.

We are pleased to hear that Dotty is doing well and is behaving like a normal bouncy puppy again 💙
