🏇🐴 Post-Event Horse Care Tips 🐴🏇

After a competition or event, taking time to properly cool down and monitor your horse can help recovery and reduce the risk of injury.

❄️ Cooling Down

✅ Walk your horse until breathing and heart rate return to normal
✅ Offer small amounts of water regularly
✅ Hose or sponge off to help reduce body temperature on warm days
✅ Allow plenty of time before travelling home

⚠️ Watch for Signs of Soreness or Injury

Keep an eye out for:

• Stiffness or reluctance to move
• Heat or swelling in legs
• Sensitivity when grooming or touching muscles
• Uneven movement or lameness
• Reduced appetite or unusual behaviour
• Cuts, rubs or sores

🩺 Early recognition of a problem can make a big difference to recovery and ongoing performance.

Remember, recovery is just as important as preparation when it comes to keeping competition horses healthy and comfortable. 🐎✨

☀️🐴 Horse Sunburn Awareness 🐴☀️

Did you know horses can suffer from sunburn too? Areas with pink skin or little pigmentation — such as white noses, around the eyes and white markings — are especially vulnerable during warm, sunny weather.

⚠️ Signs of sunburn in horses:

• Red or inflamed skin
• Dry, flaky or peeling areas
• Sensitive or painful skin
• Crusting or sores
• Horses rubbing affected areas

🧴 Tips to help protect your horse:

✅ Apply horse-safe sun cream to sensitive areas
✅ Provide shade in the field or stable during the hottest parts of the day
✅ Consider UV protective fly masks or nose guards
✅ Avoid prolonged exposure during peak sunshine hours
✅ Check pink-skinned horses regularly for early signs of irritation

Severe or repeated sunburn can become very uncomfortable and may lead to skin damage, so prevention is key during the summer months. ☀️

🌱🐴 Grass & Laminitis Awareness 🐴🌱

With the recent weather and the grass becoming richer, the risk of laminitis increases — especially in ponies, good doers and horses prone to weight gain. Early recognition is incredibly important.

⚠️ Signs to look out for:

• Reluctance to move or turning stiffly
• Short, pottery gait
• Shifting weight between feet
• Increased digital pulses
• Warm feet or hooves
• Lying down more than usual

🌿 Helpful prevention tips:

✅ Introduce grazing gradually
✅ Avoid turnout during high-risk times such as sunny days followed by cold nights
✅ Consider restricted grazing or a grazing muzzle if advised
✅ Maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise routine
✅ Feed a balanced diet with appropriate forage
✅ Monitor ponies and good doers closely during spring and summer grass growth

If you are concerned your horse or pony may be showing signs of laminitis, contact us promptly — early treatment can make a huge difference.

🐴 Equine Flu Cases on the Rise – Please Stay Vigilant 🐴

🌡️❗️We are seeing an increase in Equine Influenza cases locally and across the UK.

Equine flu is highly contagious and can spread quickly between horses through direct contact, shared equipment, clothing, and even through the air.

Please help protect your horses and others by:
✔️ Checking vaccinations are up to date
✔️ Monitoring for symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, fever, or lethargy
✔️ Avoiding unnecessary horse movement if unwell
✔️ Practicing good hygiene and biosecurity at yards and events

If you have any concerns about your horse’s health, contact 01283 799700

Let’s all work together to keep our horses safe and healthy 💙🐎

🏇 Pre-Event & Competition Health Tips 🐴

Competition season is here, and preparation is key to keeping your horse happy, healthy and performing at their best! Here are a few important reminders before heading out to your next event:

✅ Fitness – Gradually increase work to build fitness safely and avoid injury. Make sure your horse is fit for the level they are competing at.

🚛 Travel Preparation – Check your horsebox or trailer before travelling, allow plenty of ventilation, and plan rest stops for longer journeys.

💧 Hydration – Encourage drinking before and after travel. Some horses drink less away from home, so taking familiar water or adding electrolytes (if appropriate) may help.

🌡️ Monitor Health – Keep an eye out for signs of tiredness, stiffness, coughing or reduced appetite after competing or travelling.

🩺 Vaccinations & Routine Care – Ensure vaccinations, dental care and worming are all up to date before the season gets busy.

Good preparation can make all the difference for a successful and enjoyable competition season!
