These have jumped the nest recently, and I really am pleased with them a nest of 4 from blackface blackwing x blackface split blackwing m spangle and all 4 young are visual melanistic spangles.
2 blackface blackwing m spangles and 2 blackface split blackwing m spangles. The combination of black and white is really something 🤩

Something a little different for you all today…

Here’s a look at some of our Manto Negro budgies. 🖤

This is a very rare and exciting mutation that’s starting to gain a lot of attention around the world. There are still only a handful in England, so I’m incredibly pleased to have built up a nice little group already.

I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop over the coming seasons - there’s lots lined up for them and plenty to work with for the different projects that we have lined up, so keep an eye on the page for updates.

☀️ A reminder that our birds are relying on us in this heat… 💧

With temperatures climbing, it’s easy to underestimate just how quickly birds can become uncomfortable.

Whether you’ve got a couple of pet birds or a full aviary, keeping them cool and hydrated has to be a priority.

Fresh water, shade, good airflow, bathing opportunities and regular checks throughout the day can make a huge difference.

I’ve already had a few people asking how the birds are coping, and thankfully mine are doing well, but this weather is a good reminder that bird keeping isn’t just about breeding and enjoying them when conditions are perfect. It’s about making sure they’re comfortable and cared for when conditions aren’t.

A few extra minutes spent checking water bowls, moving birds out of direct sun, or giving them the chance to bathe can go a long way. If you can, a bowl outside for the wild birds would be appreciated by them also, i’m sure!

IT NEVER GETS OLD 🖤

No matter how many birds I breed, seeing these young Blackface Blackwings coming through still gives me the same buzz.

Watching these youngsters grow, change and start to show their potential is one of the best parts of the hobby.

I’ve got a really exciting number of these rarer birds coming through at the moment, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop over the coming months 👀

They’re still young and there’s plenty of time for them to mature, but I couldn’t resist sharing a look at what’s coming through.

🚨 CAN BIRDS IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH? 🦜❤️

The short answer: YES

Tomorrow, some of my feathered friends will be visiting a local school as part of their Mental Health Day.

I’ve been asked to put together a display cage and bring along a few birds to help explain how animals can help silence the noise of everyday life. For me, the responsibility of caring for a pet can be a really positive thing for many young people. It provides routine, purpose and something to focus on outside of the pressures of daily life.

We often talk about breeding, rare varieties and bloodlines on this page, but sometimes it’s worth remembering why so many of us fell in love with birds in the first place.

There’s something about spending time around them that helps you slow down for a moment. Whether it’s watching them, listening to them, or simply sitting in the aviary after a stressful day, they have a way of clearing your mind and putting a smile on your face.

I’m really looking forward to introducing the students to some of the birds and hopefully giving them an insight into a hobby that could bring them years of enjoyment.

I’m keen to know—who else finds that spending time with their birds helps clear their head after a stressful day? 🐦👇

There’s something dangerous about ‘just going to look’ at birds… 👀😂

A lot of patience, persistence and conversations to get here, but now these Black Face Blackwing Helicopters are part of Dave and my breeding projects!

For me, this is one of the best parts of the hobby. The excitement of bringing in new blood, planning future pairings, and imagining what will be sitting on the perch a few years down the line.

They’re only in the carry cage here, but I couldn’t resist getting a quick video before they settle in,

I’m really looking forward to working with these, and they’ll merge really well with the stock Dave and I currently have!
