For most people, a heatwave means ice creams, beer gardens, and complaining it’s “too hot to sleep.” For horse owners, it means early mornings, late nights, worrying about hydration, altering routines, and keeping a close eye on every horse in the yard.🐴☀️
There are plenty of organisations with great sources of information about what to be aware of and guidance how to manage your horses.
I’ll add a few in the comments below⬇️
I won’t go on to write a generic post about protocols to take during a heatwave as I’m sure your socials is already flooded with this information. ✅
So I thought I’d just pop a reminder to those it may be helpful to that’s it’s also worth thinking about feeding during extreme temperatures.
I know I did a post a little while back now about winter hydration and salt (scroll through my page if you haven’t seen them🤳) but hydration is equally important for the summer seasons too.
🪣 Sweat consists primarily of water and electrolytes, so it’s our job to make sure our horses can replace what they lose. Make sure you’re supplying salt to their diet or electrolyte support if they need it.
🪣 Wet feeds, soaked hay, or adding extra water to feeds can help with hydration too.
🪣 Some horses may go off their food slightly in the heat, so smaller, lighter feeds can sometimes help keep them eating comfortably.
Even the horses that usually cope well can struggle in these temperatures. A few simple precautions can make a huge difference ❤️ Stay safe everyone.
