Pain is a fickle thing that can absolutely never be 100 ruled out.

Pain is a complicated beast with many heads -

It is possible for your horse to be in pain and:

Not have a head-nod hip-hike lameness.

Still be compliant.

Win a rosette.

-

It is possible for your horse to experience pain which:

Doesn't respond to bute.

Only presents in certain scenarios, despite being "fine" at all other times.

Is provoked by what you are doing with them - even if you have the best of intentions.

-

It is possible for your horse to be in pain and for there to be no way to image it or diagnose it.

Similarly, it is possible for your horse to be in pain despite imaging every part of their body and it coming back clean.

-

The absence of disease isn't the only metric for health and happiness.

If you think your horse is in pain, there's going to be a reason for that thought. Please engage with professionals who care about yours and your horse's lived experience and want to support you in helping your horse to feel better.

We are out there and we do care ❤️

Continuing on the clipping theme. This lovely lady Jilted had her cushings (PPID) clip her main body was done with standard medium A2 blades her saddle patch legs and head were done with a covercoat blade (4.8mm both A2 and A5) to leave a little long hair. For her this worked brilliantly. You would never guess she is 28 and still hacking out very happily. Owners reported she was quite jolly afterwards. And I got goodies too, these are absolutely divine 😋

Clipped with the Liveryman phoenix clippers and Harmony's using standard blades and covercoat blades on both.

I am back! Been straight back to work. Yesterday had the pleasure of clipping this lovely lady who earned her self the award of the most hair of the year. This was very much a welfare/comfort clip rather than looks.
My newly serviced and fixed Liveryman phoenix clippers worked though the damp (as she was way too hot) hair flawlessly allow this little lady to feel way more comfortable. It did look like a whole horse had exploded once we have finished.

Absolutely this ⬇️
And please please get your horse scoped the only way to know is to scope. If it is not ulcers then think again if it is ulcers try and work out the cause.
It is estimated over 60% of leisure horses will have some degree of ulcers and up to 90% of competition horses.
Treating ulcers needs to be done under the vet feed supplements can be great to support but these do not treat ulcers. Management and medication can.

It is brilliant to see more and more vets discussing training for veterinary procedures. I don't know the content of this webinar, but I am sure it will be useful

https://www.facebook.com/share/19Vk2QDR9z/

🚨 There's just a week to go until our second Welfare Wednesday Webinar 🚨

In our second episode of the series, we look at ‘How to Train Your Horse for Veterinary Procedures’ with Equine Vet and Lecturer in Clinical Equine Practice at the University of Surrey, Holly Lenaghan.

📅 Wednesday 12 November
🕖 7:00 – 8:15pm

At least once a year, your horse will see a vet for their annual vaccinations and a check- up. How can we make sure that horses are prepared for everything the vet needs to do?

Holly will discuss how we can train horses for routine veterinary procedures such as accepting needles for vaccinations and sedation. Based on her experience in practice, Holly will guide us through useful techniques to help break the training down into manageable steps for both horses and horse owners to help take the sting out of vet visits.

I may have caught up with most if my messages but I may have missed some given the amount I get at this time of year. If you are waiting on me please re message. November is 99% fully booked just a few random spaces and December is rapidly filling up. Please don't leave it to the last minute to request clipping.

Please remember to bath and scrub your horse before clipping- there have been lots of dirty horses!
If you wanted a sedated clip with the vet that is fine I do this a lot and work quickly enough to get them done but you do need to book an appointment time as I don't have capacity in the winter to wait.
